I was wonderin the day I saw it @ GNSR an thought please don't tell me they clipped it with some dumb Camaro subframe? I couldn't bend well that day so I wasn't gonna bend down to check it out.

The car looked great that day!

Keep in mind on those wheel cover's that the barris's as well as many other's made thing's from what they could get . You maybe looking at a "baby moon" with a trim ring created from a full wheel cover with the center cut out! Just a thought, larry

  4. Does anyone know what size tires are on the car when it was at GNSR?
    thx

Those are Calnevar WhiteSides. They came in Chrome as well as you can see in the ad below. They are not the same as the parts used by Barris in the late 1940's but its an option that comes close.

  8. Does anyone know if the Snooky car had a back seat? I know originally it would not have except maybe opera seats. Also if the coupes that were customized be they 40 fords or 41-48 ford business coupes did not have back seats, how did the customizers finish them? Did they finish them out with rolls and pleats like the front seat and door panels or did they simply make a matching tonneau cover to cover up that area?
    thx

I don't have any photos of the Snooky Janich 1941 Ford. But here is a photo of the Jack Stewart 1941 Ford Short door coupe. It does have a rear seat and it is fully upholstered like this in 1951.

  10. Thanks Rik. Is that seat homemade or a modified original? Does anyone know?

Its home made. Bottom piece is plywood. Back I'm not sure.

This is a photo I took of the Janich Coupe interior. I don't think there is enough space to do a back seat in this car. Possibly the front bench was positioned more toward the back than on the Jack Stewart coupe.

Last I heard - earlier this month - was that the car now has its correct front axle. They used a 46-48 front axle on it first not knowing those are two inches wider than the 1941 unit. So the track was to wide and the wheels could not steer, so they had to raise it to be able to steer the car when they showed it at the GNRS. So thats fixed now. The engine is ready to run, and they are now working on the rear axle. Then the car is road worthy and they can concentrate on the body again.

It's amazing how far off some cars get on the hubcaps. There's been a few restorations lately that have use what you can get now, as opposed to what was on the car in the old photos. Accessory trim rings and caps were made by many outfits, and there must be a thousand types, it's just going to take some looking, good thing they only need two of each! The center looks like the kind of cap that is like a ripple or flipper disc only plain, I have seen those before. The rings could be anything, but I bet you it's gonna take some searching... It's not any of the ones posted. I thought of Plymouth spats at first too, but those seem to be flatter and go under the edge of a smaller center cap, these seem to float outside of the edge of a wider center cap. Sorry I don't have a useful suggestion as to what I would think they are...

Bringing this back up for some history lessons. Maybe someone new might see the big difference in what was done back in the day. They did things the right way. not over chopping and having everything laying on the ground looking like its broken.

  19. I've seen this car at a couple of local shows and am quite taken with it.

Hey quick question. Is the the original tar undercoating or did you apply. If you did apply it can you tell me the name of the product?
    Thanks

When the partly restored car was shown at the GNRS Custom Then & Now event it sat to high, and the front tires almost look like they where flush with the outside of the fenders.
There was no way the car could sit low enough without the tires rubbing the fenders

WHen Steve and George where putting the car together to meet the deadline for this show they realized to late that the 1942-48 Ford front axle is wider than the 1941 Ford front axle. And they used a wider one, since the parts for it where in better shape. When they found out this axle was to wide for a lowered car it was to late. So the car was raised to be able to turn the wheels.

Here are some photos to show the difference in these two axles.

...and after installing the correct front axle. So much better!

The engine right now is a mostly stock flathead. But in time will be dressed up with some nice period speed parts.

The tar in the photos is the original roofing tar or whatever they used that Barris added. According to Steve there was no need to remove it. They just repainted it with Chassis black.
