Vintage shots from days gone by!

This station was in Eldon a little bit north of the lake. My eyes aren't so good...can't tell if that's a Packard or a Kaiser!

 

I'll wrap up the gas station theme with a Mobile station in Eldon (where my great aunt and uncle owned a small hotel) from the '60s.

 

You can't have a vacation destination without places to stay, and Lake of the Ozarks had its share of "resorts with modern conveniences" like this one not too far from Camdenton. Check out the big Buick.

 

What's cool about this shot is that at one point in time, the lake was actually smooth enough for sail boats! Now it's so choppy from all the way-too-big boats that you couldn't do that any more.

 

The Pla-Port Lighthouse is now a condo...sniff.

 

More "modern" cabins.

 

Of course, marketing was in full force: Who wouldn't want to stay at "Whispering Oaks?" Oh, and by the way, that town is pronounced "ver-sales"...NOT "vair-sigh"!

 

Some things do last...this building still stands today.

 

This excursion boat, the "Governor McClurg", sailed out of the Grand Glaize arm of the lake.

 

The Edgewater was a popular destination.

 

Busted in Camdenton!

 

Anyone remember Ha Ha Tonka? Here it is before it burned. I spent a lot of time swimming in the spring-fed cove pictured here.

 

1942...the "castle" was built by a Kansas City businessman before the lake was built, but he died in a car accident before it was completed. His sons finished it and it spent some time as a hotel before being destroyed. It's now a state park and the ruins can still be toured.

 

My grandparents owned a farm just outside of Eldon, so we used to go to Pilkington's at the lake (and also Tuscumbia) to do shopping. I can't confirm it, but the '56 looks exactly like the one my parents had! I wonder...

 

Remember Reptile Gardens? Another one of those you-can't-swing-a-dead-cat-without-hitting-a-road-sign category of attractions. I've been told that the foundation of this building still exists along an abandonded portion of US54.

 

Somewhere around 1955 the toll bridge at Hurricane Deck was "un-tolled" so they had a parade to celebrate!

 

These two little guys (I don't know who they are, and there was no credit given for the photo) were successful anglers, but their parents failed at dressing them! Shorts with cowboy boots??? I grabbed this image mostly because of the American wheel seen on the Elky...

 

Finally, I had to throw in this one from the '20s showing the "Eldon Good Roads Delegation" on their way to Tuscumbia...not sure why they aren't going to Jeff City to lobby for better roads...

I think everyone I know had a thing for "Bailey Quarters" from WKRP.
The Front page shot from March 21 1966 Newsweek caught the eye of a
Movie/TV Producer in LA at a local News stand. That lead to some work in TV commercials.
The rest is history.
