Opinions on these Vintage Pontiac valve covers for my coupe

Having a hard time deciding between the Offenhauser (Bare aluminum) and the very early and super rare Mickey Thompson (These aren't the common Pontiac covers you see everywhere)

Nevermind the colors. Whichever set gets used most likely will get polished...although the M/Ts look pretty good painted.

The engine is a Pontiac 428 HO with a 60s Doug Nash tunnel ram.

 

I personally like the offy's......but the mickey's are cool too. No matter which direction you go you've got cool covered my friend.

 

Yeah, I like the big fins and the overall larger size of the seldom seen Offys, but the M/Ts are super rare. The last set I saw went for $480 on ebay. There was also an older version with the same shape only with the fins all the way across the top and they just said "Thompson" on top of the gasket flange closest to the exhaust side of the head..

 

Run the Offys, and sell the Mickeys to me! Seriously I would run the M/T covers. I have never seen those rocker covers before. Only seen one of the early Thompson covers that you spoke of, picture included. I only need one of the early Thompson type, or M/T cover like yours for my 195ci 62 Tempest. Are there any leads on that one????

 

The Offy's look so much like the Cal Customs they're starting to become an eye sore!! Another vote for the Mickey T's......

P.S. If I had that motor minus the intake, I'd be stuffing it in a '68 Firebird with some Ram Air IV heads... But that's just me!

I was blown away the first time I saw them too. I got a great deal on them from a guy on the PY Pontiac board.

But have you seen the other side of the valve cover like the one in this pic? I actually saw a set on ebay recently and tried to bid on them at the end, but the refresh didn't happen fast enough. I believe they went for close to $500 as well.

 

The M/T's are so cool. My buddy had a set on his 68 Firebird, same Pontiac blue and all. I always thought they looked cool.

 

Tough choice. They both look good, but I'd go with the Offys.

 

I like the M/T the best. Don't know why they just are more appealing to me than the offy covers.

Even though I'm a big fan of MT, I never really liked the valve covers. I would run the Offy's, they just look better IMO.

 

I have couple of pairs of each, so I like both of them, but I don't think you can fit roller rockers under the M/Ts...

Yes, the M/Ts are quite rare and the ones that say "thompson" in small letters are even more so. I had a line on a set of those, but the guy flaked.

Is this the engine for the coupe????

Offy would be my choice. Very cool either way.

 

I like them both for different reasons, and they both look the business.
Why not run the Offy on one side and the M/T on the other.
See how many double-takes you get!

 

I have been a traditionalist all my life and I'm old. I never cared for the M/Ts when they first came out. They got so popular so quickly along with those ugly yellow plug wires in the late 60s/early 70s that I just don't like them. Believe it or not they are just too new for my tastes and over used. Every muscle car in the USA seemed to have M/T VCs. Just my probably unpopular opinion.

 

Have a set of each but like these better.

Some of the M/T stuff goes for silly money. I have bid up to 500. plus and lost by 200. or more. No less I like what you have!

Scored these today at the Monroe, WA. swap meet for a $100. They were listed as Ford covers, by a Pontiac guy? I put them on my spare 4-banger for the last photo.

 

. I always look at valve covers at swaps and I have never seen those in person. not even on a vintage race car at Bakersfield. cool.

 

Mt looks to modern .Offy is more period correct
