Hot Rods 5/6-speeds behind traditional motors?

Much thanks to the HAMB three-pedal contingent. Looks like I'll be selling of my muncie M-20 4-speed and trading up to an OD tranny. Lots of good tips here per usual. I'll be carrying the info on me next swap meet I go to.

not exactly a traditional motor but i have a t-56 from a 96 camaro ss behind a sbc in my coupe. 9" rear with 4.11's. I love it. Could actually go up to 4.56 gear and still be ok. They are big and take up room, but I still have plenty of room in my car. used all the stock t-56 parts and an adapter flywheel from centerforce. works great.

 

i have been debateing wheather to put a T5 behind my worked 401 nailhead in my 56 buick. i have been told that it may not hold on to the abuse, not only with the motor having a ton of power but more importanly trying to put that power through the trans and have it move that massive car with out exploding. im not realy up on the 5 and 6 speed trans, anyone knowledgable have any sugjestions? any info would be aprreciated.

 

Great thread. As I am SLOWLY putting my 58 Impala together, I am hoping to run a 5 or 6 speed behind the 348 tri-power. Haven't seen a post on this combo. Any comments from the gallery on this?

 

One of my friends has an old studebaker with a 426 hemi in it with dual quads on it and a t5 behind and gets about 25mpg on the highway

 

I don't thing you'll have any problems, unless your running slicks it isn't going to hook up enough to break the T5. I made about 400 passes with a stock Mustang V6 t5 behind a 351 in my 2700 lb Comet with slicks, ran 12:50s pulling the front wheels. The trans was fine till I put a cevlar clutch in the car. I have a tremec Z speck T5 in it now behind a 425 stroker motor and it's held up so far and the .64 overdrive lets my run 70mph with 457 gears on the interstate.

 

Which T5 (outta which year/make donor) would work best for a 275 horse 350 with a 3.08 rear end, pushing 3000 pounds? Not a rocket ship, but a nice around town and highway cruiser.

My t5 is the shit behind the lincoln y,easy to adapt to about any bellhousing using homebrew methods.85-90 at 2600-2800 fuckin passin everything,haha

 

Look into the AX-15 5 speed. Found in 2WD jeep cherokees, dakota pickups, and many other places.

See if you can pull one from a 3rd gen Trans am/ Camaro. I had one in mine (bolted to the 305) and it held up VERY well. T5's are kind of hit & miss though, some can take a beating like a red headed step-child; others not to much. (A buddy has one in his 550hp Mustang that he just beats on relentlessly, as in; CONSTANT drag racing and the like, yet I've heard of people blowing them up with even the stock 2.8L V6 under normal use).

That tranny was great though. With the stock rear end (3:20 IIRC), at 120kph (about 65mph for you yankees) it cruised at 2200 rpm. For what it was, that car was quite good on gas.

While it wasn't the tightest tranny, it did the job fine without any problems whatsoever.

 

My car came with a 5 spd tranny out of an S-10 pickup. Motor is a 52 flathead .30 over and 3.08 gears. It runs good with the tranny and gear ratio. I run about 1500 rpm in 5th (no speedo). I hear Speedway Motors has the adapter.
