I'll just say that everything my friend posted at the start of this thread went down just as he said... although Juan and his wife Maria aren't really all that hard to find. I had their home address within a few minutes of looking. They have lived within about a mile of that UPS Store at several locations during the past few years. (The Rowland address shown below is old, they live in La Puente now; I'll stop short of posting their actual home address.)

I don't personally put a lot of stock into those "post a gripe" websites as they're mostly trying to screw business owners into paying for arbitration services or the like, but in this case I have to agree, saving a few bucks is not worth the hassle.

I'm still waiting for four parts. David called me over a week ago to tell me they were being shipped to me (and like nailheadroadster, that makes them about 3 months late) and they still haven't shown up.

Qoute: Can anyone tell me the name of a REPUTABLE chrome shop near Florida? It's going to be difficult sending my parts to some place that is not within driving distance.

Try Gulf Plating in Ft. Lauderdale. I drove a bunch of parts over to them one week and the next week they called and said they were done. Very nice, deep plating and the price was reasonable. I will use them again.

Can't say the same for Action Plating in Opa Locka, Fl. They plated some stuff for me and the roll bar wore down to copper in a short period of time. Some other stuff turned green after a few years.

    Wow, that sucks.

I know you don't want to have parts done outside of FL area, but we are here if you need us. You may be surprised how fixable the "beyond repair" parts are.

It sounds like these two guys are brokers. They don't do ANY of the actual work and send it all to other shop(s) south of the border (got to keep the prices down.) If something goes wrong (bad plating, broken part, missing parts,) then there is no fixing it, because they don't care and they think you won't do anything substantial about it. They just make you wait long enough to finally beg for your parts back in any condition. All of a sudden, they are off the hook, as you are happy to have at least something back.

What this man said, they're the best, utterly top notch work, in fact they refused to plate my welded together three piece, I had to beg them, they give in eventually , it looks great to me but wasn't up to their standards of straightness, they're over five years old and still look great.

Regarding Bumper Boyz, I went to a large swap meet and bought some bumper guards from them that I was able to inspect prior to purchase. They held up great with no problems. That said, no way I would ever buy anything from them sight unseen. They have a piss poor reputation.

Best plating I ever got...couldn't be happier with them...quality is excellent, price is reasonable...they have had booths at both GoodGuy's events and NSRA events.

Have never dealt with ChromePlaterJosh altho I've read several Hambers on here that have and see good comments about him.

If you'd like to see samples, go to my build thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build&page=16

I have used Superior in Pomona and have been happy with their work. I have already spent $1.000 on chrome and I will dropping off some more parts next week
49 Merc must have a loose nut.

  15. bingo.......sounds like them. first I have a hard time with platers at swapmeets and from another state to boot. Lastly be REAL, REAL careful choosing a chome plater in california with the laws here most good ones are gone. IF you do choose one here get LOTS of recommendations (and still be leary).

Sorry about your loss of parts and time, you can try the legal system here (most likely they're pros at it).

You want something chromed, go to a Chrome Shop. Do not go to swap meets for chrome. You might get what you pay for at a swap meet but you may not get anything at all.

Reputation is everything. And when someone goes around shopping for the best deal, keep in mind that it is a combination of price/quality/rep.Price alone is not a determiner for me.

Looks to me like you should have done some research. Chrome platers in California are few and far between. There are no new chrome shops in California and because of the present laws there never will be. The few that exist have been in business for years and are grand fathered in, once they close it is another chrome shop gone. My bet is that these guys are getting their chrome done in Mexico, which explains the variable quality. If the address is not the address of the actual shop I would be very suspect. A little research up front, just asking the HAMB guys will get you a great list of real chrome shops, as you have seen, a little research will certainly reduce the number of headaches.

I spoke with United Plating aka Bumper Boys at Louisville a few years ago about replating my 54 chevy grill. They wanted 1500 to replate it which is what I have been quoted already so that did not suprise me. I ask to see a grill they had already done and he unwrapped a 54 grill that he had for a customer that he had plated and it was the worst plating I have seen. My grill with the orginal chrome looked 1000% better. I am going to use Advanced Plating out of Nashville TN. I have seen a lot of there work at car shows and they seem to be the best that I have found.

We haven't seen anything in our experiences with United Plating to suggest that Bumper Boyz are related. And in fact, one of the reasons we tried UP was that their plating that nailheadroadster bought was excellent quality work -- and we specifically compared it to BBoyz sub-par work.

Does anyone know of reputable chromers in Nevada, Oregon or Arizona? California's pricing is out of this world!

I see bumper boys all the time at the swap meet I can see that their bumpers are not as good of quality as others due to having a goldish repletion. I never knew they were doing this type of shit I now just want to pistol whip them a few times.

I'm new to this forum, but I wanted to let you know my experience with united plating and "Juan the bumper guy." I met him at a swap meet in Oklahoma and we talked about getting a set of bumpers for my 66 GTO. He quoted a price that was about the going rate, BUT he said he had a set back in his shop and could bring them to me on his next trip to Okla. in about 2 weeks. My local plating shops had quoted me a turn around time of 3 months to plate mine. I told Juan to call me when he came back to okla. and I would meet him and buy the bumpers. No call, nothing for 7 weeks. I called one day and the man who answered said Juan was in St Louis Mo and would be coming through okla in 9 hours and he could meet me and give me the bumpers. Strange huh, On the day I called Juan was coming to Okla. with my bumpers. I met him at a truck stop and he did not have my bumpers, but he wanted to take mine and would plate them and ship them back to me in about 2-3 weeks, and he wanted me to pay in advance. Stupid me, I did. In 3 weeks, nothing. I call, leave messages, no call, nothing. Finally get someone to answer, he said they came out with yellow spots and had to be redone. Would take awhile longer, 3 days tops. after a week i called and got no answer, left alot of messages. Nothing. Then 5 weeks, 2 days after Juan took my bumpers, they were delivered to my house by UPS. Perfect. They look great. Communication with these people sucks big time, but they do good work. It's a leap of faith I will never take again, but this time it worked. Whew. Buy from him if he has it in hand, but trying to call him and check on your stuff is almost impossible.

I realize that it is far away from most of you that are posting in this thread but...
I used to work at Victoria Plating 15 years ago (damn was it really that long ago?) and they always did good work and made sure you left satisfied. Flash forward 15 years (really 15?!?) and it is still the same guys working there, aside from me. I expect that they are still putting out the same quality. I am working in a different plating shop now but I have only positive things to say about them and their quality.

Victoria Plating now sends bumpers to Vancouver to be plated.
    Where do you work now?
    Send me a PM.
    I'm in Cobble Hill.

Actually, they have always sent bumpers to Vancouver. Their tanks aren't large enough to fit a bumper. They do everything else in-house. I should have said that before, but I didn't really want to write an ad for them. It didn't seem appropriate. I just wanted to throw another option out there.
