wow. & i thought the "hurst" mount i just pulled out of a car was bad...& that thing was hacked out of diamond plate with a torch, with absolutely no regard to symmetry! i'll try & find you a pic of that gem.

Thats why i get nervous when i buy cars that i cant see in person and people talk about the swaps they did. It looked like what my high school teacher use to refer as a trained chicken walked over it!!

  7. Kinda reminds me of coat hanger welds that I've seen - only this one looks like he grabbed the PLASTIC coat hangers....

    Wow.

Bought a "hot rod" 47 Ford coupe many moons ago that had a 371 Olds and hydramatic. X-member had been torched away, and replaced with some I-beams laid parallel to the frame and tack-welded in place. Rear trans mount was a piece of aluminum rectangular tubing held to the I-beams with some C-clamps. It ran...but man, was it squishy when it shifted. That took about two full weeks of intensive work to cure.

I can remember back when I worked at a body shop at our local Chevy dealership & I was checking out a truck that one of the serivce writers owned. Guys were huddled around it with the hood opened & someone told me to check it out. The most obvious thing was the Pontiac engine. Then I was pointed out the motor mounts made from chain links. Beyond hillbilly engineering.

My brother and his buddy were racing their old pick-ups.

    56 Ford vs 58 Chevy.

The Chevy owner had bolted his small block in with All-Thread.

The engine twisted loose, wrapped the fuel ine and the truck caught fire.

The gas tanks were behind the seat in those trucks.

The boy was screaming for help as he burned alive but the fire was too intense for my brother to save him.

My brother has lived with those nightmares for many years.

  18. I didn't set the price on it. On the other hand, I also want the car, so I didn't argue, it's pretty damned solid otherwise and what does a set of motor mounts cost? $100?

... and please don't tell me you're another one of these morons who doesn't understand what an asking price is.

^^ yeah, so anybody that needs to learn and cant afford to go to school is fuckt!
its not the tools, its the users common sense on puttin lifes at risk because of their shitty work.

I learned weldin w/ a stick welder doin my own bicycles and stuff, it was years b4 i felt confident to weld on a car. and this is the way it should be.

Anyways, the gas tank is kinda of a joke to look at. cant understand what the mounts are or how they actually mount anything.

  21. If you cant weld good... weld a lot....

Remember some of the stuff a certain very good friend of mine with the initials LL used to do?

  24. Gee to think that I've been overbuilding for years! I could have saved a lot of steel on the various projects had I known how to set 'er up like this,ha,ha.....
    What an idiot.

  25. Nah pal, if you can't use common sense the rules pretty much lay it out for you, most cars over here are backyard built, not everyone in NZ is a certified engineer or welder for that matter and the system works good, and beleive me for the size of this country theres a shitload of cars being built, when it was first introduced there was alot of guys with attitudes just like you but it works.

Anybody have a copy of Street Rodder (or maybe Hot Rod) from around ’79 where they showed several photos of ‘how not to do stuff!”
Would tie in very nicely to this thread.

The bigger the glob, the better the job.
I had a friend in high school who had a 54 Ford pick-up. Steering box welded to the frame and was reversed. Wheel right, turn left. Took some gettin used to but the guy who tried to steal it wasnt hard to catch. He got TWO surprises that night.
