60's-70's period correct 55 chevy gasser pics!!!

    I've posted it on many similar threads, but once more probably won't hurt.
    A friend of mine raced this car in the mid 60's. Pretty typical of the competitive 55 gassers that raced around here.

    Here is my 55 from 1968 called the Roadrunner that ran out of Laurenburg N.C.. The other pic is how it looks now.

    Question is what were yal running? Straight axles? Stock A arms? Inner fenderwells or none? fenderwell headers or regular longtubes? Full interior or gutted? Answering these questions would really help, and i would greatly appreciate it!

    Also i noticed a lot of these cars have the stock quarters, where there more radius quarters or stock?

    I seem to remember more radiused wheelwells than stock. Remember, these were race cars first and anything that made them easier to work on was quickly adapted. Sometimes the radius job wasn't too much to brag about either.
    Inner fender wells were part of the rules.
    Thanks for remembering my project. It's been dead in the water while I took care of some other stuff, but I hope to get back on it soon. It's gonna be white when I finish it. (G)

    Well from what i see it looks awesome, love the big tires tucked under the quarters, So im debating to radius the quarters or not, if i radius them im going to run my brand new set of polished torque thrust originals, if i dont im thinking of running painted black rally wheels in the back, and some slots runners in the front.

    Just curious was that car running a 283? or 327? maybe a 301?

    Well i figured i would post some pics of my car, don't criticize me, i tend to change stuff around a lot so you will see that hey it looks like its progressing, O no nevermind he pulled the motor and decided to make the firewall super straight :p I have a bad habit of doing that, and im a protectionist lol.

    And this next pic is my dads car, its some what nostalgic sept for the wheels, it has a 331 sbc, with a muncie m-22 4spd and the stock 8.2 10 bolt rear with 3.73 or 4.10's not too sure and a posi unit, my dad has had this car for 30+ year, will get more pics soon my parents are getting a divorce so my dad doesn't live with me anymore :/

    Man ive always loved that two lane black top car, ever since i was a kid.

Started out to run in D/G with a 265 bored to 272 but had to bore block so far I ended up using a old set high compression pistons from a friends 69 Corvette 283..The car ran C/G as it was very light, damn thing ran so well I didn't want to add weight so later in the season I just replaced it with a 301 and continued on in C/G..that 301 was my favorate, 40 lbs steel flywheel, Scott fuel injection, Crane cam & heads...leave the line at 6,800 and shift at 9,000...god what a sound!!!

    Wow sounds like a wicked 301, were you running 5.13 gears or lower?

    One of the most famous 55 Chevys was J.C. Sizemore's Goldenrod. It was 10 years ahead of it's time. It ran mostly in the southeast. The picture shows a chop top, wheelbase changes, and many more small changes.
    I can't download the picture from at work, but do a search on yahoo or google using J.C. Sizemore+goldenrod

  25. 57 Pontiac rear axle with 6.14 gears mounted on a spool, 7.10X8X15 M&H slicks (28" dia.) about 8,500 through the lights, not real fast but quick, as I remember..it would launch great and et at or near record.

    many gas cars had "subtle" wheelbase alterations. when i was working on the Vail, Conkling and Shosie Bros. Henry J, we found that the wheelbase had been shortened to 97" from the original 100". the car ran legal in A/Gas and was never flagged in tech for violating the spirit of the rules

    That is a wild looking ride, but going to advoid the chop top and the altered wheels base, would like to find a rust bucket to do that tough, would be very cool!

    HOLY MOLY!!!! 6.14's!!!! Im guessing you didnt do much street driving lol, sounds like a wild ride, what was your best ET? And dang i bet that sucker had a hell of a launch!
     
  29. When I built that car it was a "RACE" car, not some wannabe gasser like they build today, it was never street driven and the ET's started in the low 13's and worked down into the low 12's.
