Once again an invitational flathead class was run at the Shelsley Walsh hill climb event this past weekend. You know if the thrashing of sidevalve engines is involved then a few hot rodders are gonna be up for the action. Here are a few of my pics... The venue Flatheads in the paddock Spinning up the tyres Attacking the bottom S A few familiar cars in the campsite and finally, the new blown motor in Boz
Looks Like serrious Fun . Nice place to have it with seating for spectators also. Cheers for sharing Shrapnel
A few more pics at random... Boz looks great without fenders or headlights! Clark's (enbloc's) 36 coupe is probably the nicest rod in this country now in my opinion, it's perfect! That didn't stop him driving it like he stole it! even getting it 90 degrees to the track and facing the bank on the final bend on one run in the wet! He gathered it in though and motored to the finish. Heart in mouth moment for sure for those watching, god knows what was going through Clark's mind! Beautiful part of the country. Oh and I really liked this 32 pick up in the camp site
Check out this link. http://www.flatheadmeltdown.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=39&Itemid=39 It belongs to Jim Turnbull who is the go to guy in this country for serious flatheads. His roadster was at one point the quickest flathead powered car having run a 12,7 @ 109mph.
There is a lot of history with this hill climb I believe. Any idea how long they have been racing there? Thanks for sharing the pictures. Some great cars.
Shelsley has been used since 1905 and is apparently the oldest operational motorsport venue in the world. http://www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk/
Don't know the full spec on the car but it belongs to Mike. He is Russ Gaylord Fontana on here so might be worth a PM.
85 used to belong to Clark (Enbloc) who now runs the '36 Coupe. It ran a very quick four banger which is currently trapped in California after a trip across the salt flats this year. Mike is the current custodian and now runs a rather strong V8 that once lived in his sprint car. We rolled home across country last night without a hitch after a weekend of pressing on uphill. Brilliant fun and certainly considered mad by the other racers for not trailering home... Mine's the scruffy little T no. 83 by the way...
WOW! I was expecting a steep dirt hillside, paddle tires, and soil flying hither and yon. I guess a hillclimb is different in the UK than it is in the US. Cool cars, BEAUTIFUL setting!
It was a blast to run the hill, not only for the chance to compete with the other flattys but to run on the oldest continued use race track in the world. That hill has so much history it was an honour to be part of it.
