Let me start off the noob questioning for the month.
I am working through the carb issues on my Model A. I'm running a Ford AAI two barrel. I actually have the car running fairly well. No more backfires and doesn't quit on idle (most of the time)
The thing I'm wondering about now is what's called the power or enricher valve in the base of the carb. Do I need such a thing for a four banger? What would happen if I just plugged it off?

 

Received, but it is still in the crate as to not tempt me to start work on it.
I have a couple of projects to finish before I tear into it.

Picked up a B block at the corvallis swap meet this weekend. It had some repair to the deck around the 2 and 3 exhaust valves. Looks like it was repaired with bronze. I've done little cleaning to this point not wanting to make a bad situation worse. Can any of you who've been down this road give me any pointers. the block is badly rusted. - Norm

 

What are B blocks worth? I have an extra block with insert bearings and counter-weighted crank. All in very good order.

 

Had one I saw for sale locally for 400$ recently at a swap.... had babbit though. I would say well past 1000$ for what you probably have bluto.-Weeks

There are quite a few brazed or welded "B" blocks out there. You bought it. Now is the decision time. How much do you want to invest in it? Check around and see if you can get it pressure tested. The block that came with my 4 port has been repaired with braze, the intake plugs in the deck were brazed in. It has a couple of cracks repaired with braze.
It is apparent that the 2 cracks in #4 exhaust (1 repaired) was caused by driving in the hard seat in this block. The "B" block my 2 port is on probably has a couple of lb. of braze in it or on it. That includes the 2 port. I realize that is an exaggeration but if it were gold I would scrap them out!

 

The block has inserts..... bearings are good. Did you miss the counter weighted crankshaft part? Crankshaft looks new.

A couple of guys from the Anti donut breakfast group and I went on a trip to Flabob Airport in Riverside this Saturday to see an antique airplane fly in and hanger open house.
We drove @ 120 miles round trip to find that the fly in was canceled because the wind was blowing too hard. Got to see some neat planes.

 

I have a question about high compression heads. I want to run the new snyders 6 to 1 head on my 28 A. I have installed a holley 94, intake and header with exhaust. To my knowledge the internals of the engine havent been touch and are all original. Would installing a high compression head be a bad idea. It seems that everyone says something different so I'm not sure. Any info or opinions would be great thanks.

If the engine sounds good and doesn't smoke or push oil out the breather go for it. My engine sat for 50 years I ran it stock for 4-5 mouths it pushed a little oil out the breather I put a head on it it ran much better but pushed a little more oil out the breather. Then 3 hard years later I got another head 7 to 1 it ran real nice but my right foot and too much timing broke a piston oops my bad that engine would still be running if I timed it right

Yup-- and too much timing--or not retarding the spark when pulling at low speed- will crack up the babbitt in the rods also

I am going to fit the HAL to a five main block

What do you call this mod. to a spring?

Over carbed with the gutted stromberg 97 set up for go-fast mode, and a B-timing cover on my A motor makes timing difficult for this dumbass 25 year old. It really clears out at full throttle for a stocker. Buddy claimed I was going 75 mph on Porterville Hwy but I think maybe 65 is possible.-Weeks

 

That spring as it is now will be about as effectual as no spring at all, because the second leaf has nowhere to go, and the third leaf has very little room to move. A dumb idea, IMO.

 

Do you that eye looks reversed Jim? If you do then your eye must be better than mine.
