A little help here, maybe?
Last year, while at OCFS and ACOT was there, I made mention to Bill St.George about a restored midget that had been sold for $100.00. Today, George got back to me, asking if I'd heard anything more, which I haven't. In fact I'd forgotten about it.
Here's what was said, via e-mail:

It was in the May 2010 issue - the article about the midget sold for $100.00

The article took up all of page 56 with two photos - one before and one after they got the car. Anthony "Tony" Cardoza is the one who had bought the Gus Carlheim powered midget from Andy Anderson - a former driver and car owner from East Hartford, Ct. in 1953. It was the former "Lottie" car that Johnnie Rice drove.
The car was in rough shape and it was rebuilt from the ground up. They numbered it # 7 and it was "French Blue" in color. It ran with the ARDC and NEMA between 1953 & 1957. Ronnie Evans, King Carpenter and Johnnie Arrigoni were some of the drivers. He said they also had a driver from Nyack, NY for the Rhinebeck track, but couldn't recall his name. They ran at Seekonk, Medford Bowl, Waterford, Flemington and Rhinebeck. When he moved to California on July 4,1957, he sold the midget - with two engines, trailer, extra tires and wheels for $100.00 to a young fellow in Glastonbury, Ct. The new owner supposedly parked it in his tobacco barn.

TommyA19, Holy Mackrel I grew up in Glastonbury CT and 1957 was the year I started racing. I wonder who it was, the only one I knew with a midget in Glastonbury was Fay Birchard but he was no young fellow. On second thought I was only 18 so anyone older than 21 was older than a young fellow. Fay Birchard's midget was v8 60 powered.
I don't think your talking about Fay Birchard's midget.....Anyone got ideas? Denny Z

 

I really want to go again this year but I don't know if it's gonna work out. I do have that Tuesday off though.

1954 Norwood , Ma payoff

 

At first, I thought Landry made $5,500.00 then when I went way over to the right, it was somewhat smaller. $65.00 for a feature win in 1954? At least gas was a lot cheaper back then - as was most everything else. But $65.00???

 

Can't help as far as a photo goes, but I think it was two on bottom, two in the middle and one on top.

 

I have a photo of Pappy and Jeep Colkitt standing together at the trailer. I'll have to find it.

Ray...Ray Brown bought the 98 from jim DeMarco in 1960 and renamed it the "RaJo" offy after himself and his wife Josephine. I do not believe he ever drove for DeMarco himself..

 

Was it the # 98 that Jim had in 47 or 48? If so, then it was 12 years old, at least. How many 12 year old midgets are around today?

 

Thanks Lee when I can get to the track I will be wrenching the car Mark's a real brite kid very polite and smart hopefully we can get him fast before too long.

There is a picture of Ray Brown standing next to the Willet's 98 offy.
It seems to be the same car....John

Yup, and hes not all the way in the seat, seen him run at the Wisc. state fair when it was still a dirt track .

 

An original mid to late 30's midget built and driven by Bill Scarince out of New Jersey who made his living with this Van Blerk SOHC 4cyl. powered car. Shown here in these Bob Ochtrup 90's photos with his son Bill Jr. aboard. This rare car remains in the family with Bill.

 

That Van Blerk Midget that was campained by my friend Bill Scarince was bought from my friend Ben Cook here in Pa. Ben is the grandfather of the Cook boys who build the Ben Cook sprinters here in Pa. They are currently building some of the finest titanium race car parts in the country. Ben the third follows the stuff on HAMB.
Bill Scarince told me he bought the car from Ben Cook Sr. in the mid 30`s

 

Remember 1977 when ARDC midgets raced in Convention Hall Altantic City NJ ? enjoy!
