Hot Rods THREE SPRINGER , 3 SPRINGER picture thread

spent hours looking at old threads and was thinking there should be a dedicated three springer picture thread. I'm not sure but i think the pre war 3 springer was a major factor contributing to the cars we all love.thanks for any info and pictures.

Eric Geisert owned/still owns? that when he was working for SRM. There is a small writeup about it 10 or so years ago.

That car posted at the top is the Art Gerrick roadster, currently residing in the Speedway Motors museum. The 1951 Hot Rod article says it has '24 Olds frame rails. I just found out a week ago that one of our own HAMBers used to own that car.

Here's my 3 springer built in the late 90's, I used a 1919 Dodge chassis, Chrysler axle and handmade spring mounts.

The tree springer would be the perfect opportunity to do something different while remaining deeply traditional. I'm always disappointed when I see a non-Ford car converted to transverse springing in the front. While I love Fords and would never own anything else (at this point in life), it seems regressive to cut the front off a perfectly good Chevy, Buick, Dodge, Essex, etc.,etc. chassis and hang a Ford style front axle and spring. Substituting an inferior system so to speak.

 

I'm not sure where this thread is going, but I like where it is going.

In the just wondering department, I've never heard the term "three springer" before. I just thought they were in that genric "modified" roadster class. Do we have a history lesson due? Gary

Both Franklin and Chrysler axles were used, Chrysler's are a little easier to come by and a lot cheaper, Chuck Spurgin's roadster ran a chrysler axle.

Nor brakes what marvels of 1925. That is Chuck Spurgin's '25 Chev roadster in 1941 The model A Vicky is Eddie Miller Jnr's.

Absolutely this is why I enjoy these cars because for the most part they are not Ford and aren't the bellybutton A and '32 traditional cars.

Sometimes the three springer arrangement wasn't a viable option particularly on one man mods such as Giovanine Mod, Warth/Orr, Remington, Dietrich,

 

Got a long way to go. Steel 23/25 roadster body, 1925 Chevy frame, Model A rear end, Frankling front axle and steering, Whippet grille. Not sure on motor yet. I've got a diamond block A engine laying around and a Rajo B Model T engine. Favoring the A for now.

Three Springer refers to the layout of a chassis parallel front springs and transversal rear. When you hear the term "Three Springer Era" it is referring to the time leading up to WW2 but mostly the 1930s. Majority of 3 springers were Modifieds and they raced in the same Modified class as the other Modifieds which had transversal front and rear. Most early Gow Jobs ran Chev, Essex, Star, Dodge, Olds etc chassises as they were stronger than the Ford T frame, another advantage was the built in rear kick up which allowed the cars to be lowered. now the reason allot of these mods had a transversal rear spring was that the Ford banger was the most popular engine to Hop Up so it was easier to just adapt the whole driveline plus the Ford rear was stronger. A by product of using the Ford rear suspension was it lowered the rear and also saved weight by lopping off the rear frame and only using one spring instead of two.

Could be a Chev tie rod as well very similar
