Projects Building a new fab table: Somewhat budget consious

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ELpolacko, Apr 6, 2011.

  1. Her is where the bolts came through on the channel,

Needlouvers? stopped by to give me a much needed hand in wrapping this up. Here are some of the installed bolts.

We spent a bit of time cleaning things up, removing any debris from under the table top before tightening things up. But after removing most of the light red rust here it is. Nearly ready for service.

I still want to lay out a grid of threaded holes for clamping things down. But I need to get some actual customer work done to get the cash flow back to positive!

    Thanks for looking!

    Badass table !.............Littleman

  3. OH, almost forgot the tally sheet.

Weight wise, the table top checked in at 1225.125 LB
The channel was 460 LB before cutting, only three feet went unused.
The 8 legs were 5.3 LB each totaling 42.5 LB
The center spar checked in at 34.2 LB
And I estimate the two 2X6X.25 wall tubes were about 40 LB
The 2X3X.25 tube had to be over 12 LB
The four 23 inch sections of 3" angle was close to 22 LB

I am just going to guess but this puts me over 1800 LBs

Cost wise, the top and channel were $1540
    The swivel feet were $153
The four cans of spray paint $25
The box of 1/2-13 flat head bolts was $53

Cost total was just under $1800

Just under a buck a pound! Neato

I clicked on The Plugz video and it played right until I finished reading the thread. :)

I'm sure you considered it, but why no gussets on the middle plate with the feet? It doesn't need them once positioned but I was thinking if you pushed the table around the shop with the forklift the middle leg might want to fold. Just wondering why because I know you have a good reason.

That is a seriously kick ass table and worthy of its own build thread. Some day I'll have the square feet and cubic dollars to have one too.

  6. I really debated putting gussets on the middle legs. I waited until I had it installed it is possible to upset it a bit when it was upside down. About two or three degrees of deflection with a STRONG memory. Now that it's upright and the full weight on it, they stay put. I don't see an advantage to doing any gussets on a stationary table like this. If it had wheels that would be a different story.

  7. One HELL of a coffee table my friend!

Salf100, there is also a gnarly video of that truck unleashing the sleeping beast at a gas station.

  20. I was wrong. His coupe went to Alabama. Looked just like that before Hi-Speed put it in blk. primer. I'm currently heavily medicated and not thinking straight.

  21. No, you got it right. This is the car you are thinking of and it will be going to Alabama. Just here for some modifications to the chassis.

  23. Been drilling and tapping 164 holes in six sections of 28 gridded holes in the top to attach and clamp various stuff to it. Pictures to come!

Steve: VERY NICE!!....and you are crazy dedicated to be drilling/tapping all those holes without the aid of a mag drill. I would have begged, borrowed or stole a mag drill (ok, maybe rented:), as it causes me physical pain just imagining doing that many by hand:)

He's cheating... He did borrow a mag drill! He's still going to be cross eyed by the time he's done! He was on number 32 when I left this morning...

  28. Yup, cheating.

Hired a new guy last week, on his first day I asked if he had access to one, and he did! And this is my hole progression, 1/3 of the way done! WOOO!

And here's a random video for your enjoyment.

  29. I was going to ask abotu a mag drill, seemed only logical.
