Im glad i have a money Tree right next to my skittles tree so i dont have to worry about anything in life ever,, This year we planted a cancer free vine as well so nobody over here gets any cancers. LIFE IS GOOD.

 

I will add that the shows that I have taken my A's to. I go not to win a trophy or win anything at that. I go because I like being around old cars and 99% of the other car owners have always been great to talk to. where else can you see so many different walks of life getting along in one spot. we all have one thing in common we love old cars.

 

We go to several shows here in Texas and in a few adjacent states around with bands, shade, great cars, with 500 to 1500 entrants and have never paid more than $35-. So it can be done. Somebody is greedy, whether it's the venue or the promoter. BUCKD

 

I started this post because i couldn't believe my eyes!!!I just go to small car shows and cruisers I don't mind paying if it's for charity,but man that's crazy

 

We went to the Scottsdale good guys and they had less than 50 % of the venders from last year . We are not going any more.

Just went to a show on Sat. $ 35 and a free t shirt, ALL THE MONEY GOES TO THE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP. The hall was free, everything was donated. Great show and it was very fun

 

Kind of like charging the clowns to come to the circus !!

 

Pair A Dice cruiser car show in Delano Mn, August 13th is still $10.00 per car. Spectators get in free. There is food available, Dj, Slow drags, muffler raping contest, and loudest exhaust contest. It is our 23rd year of having a great time.

 

Tough subject, I have to be very selective on a geezer income. I may go to an event and just spectate and enjoy the social aspect of seeing my long distance pals. Strange economic times my friends. ~sololobo~

 

Visit with a Vet, VA Hospital, Dublin,Ga. 14 May 2011 $20 reg. fee all proceeds go to help vets and they are the judges of the show! Thats a good way to spend a day,saying thank you to those that give us the freedom to do this.

I have so much time and money in my cars,it seems they oughta pay us for showing up,But if you Drivem ,it's a Car Show everyday.

I will pay if it is for a Good cause like a benefit for Service Men/Women or Feeding the less fortunate.

 

Yeah, I'm not paying those kinds of entry fees to show my car, I don't care how big the event is. Not trying to line the pockets of promoters. If it's a charity, that's a different story.

It's nice to get compliments on my rides while I'm actually driving them. A thumbs-up on the road, or some chit-chat at a fuel stop is compliment enough. Hell, just getting back home from wherever I've driven to is a pretty good feeling. I build this old stuff for me and my family to enjoy, I don't need anyone else's approval or trophies to justify it.

If enough people feel the same way and don't go, they'll dry up. The ridiculous fees won't stand for long in this economy. Vote with your wallets, guys..

Drive your show car/rod to the expensive car shows and park it in the spectator lot and walk into the show. When all the cool cars are in the spectator lot and not on the show grounds they will figure it out and lower the admission fee.

 

Hooker Car Show is still just 20 bucks. That gets you a t shirt, meal, dash plaque, and a ticket for the drawings. With over 10,000 dollars in cash and prizes the entry fees only partially offset the cost. We do not exploit entrants for our own gain. (contrary to the name of the show) Come to Hooker Oklahoma September 10th 2011 and have a great time and a good chance at putting something back in your pocket.

How about this, South Tulsa Bapist Church. No entry, free food (burgers, dogs, brauts, pop, water,coffee cookies, cupcakes and pie.) Nice big parking lot great people and you always get some very different cars.

 

Get off your ass and put on your own show some time, and then get back to me.
Venue rental, advertising, insurance (because some jack-off will get hurt and decide to sue the promoter because "They've got lots of money."), staff, communications equipment, PA equipment, garbage disposal, porta-johns, tickets, etc. etc. et fucking cetera. And let's not forget the accountant and tax work after the show to deal with all of it.

You hit the nail on the head: "their BUSINESS." When you can stroll into Dairy Queen, the local body shop or movie theater and use their goods and services without paying for it, you'll have a legitimate bitch.

Until then, you're just whining. Do us a favor and stay home.

The KKOA show in Salina, KS, is the only one I will pay to enter. You get your money's worth there.

 

Duece Day in Victoria BC Canada, Mr Clark puts on a show like none other, Next one is 2013,every three years. Enter before May and it is free, lots of swag. Imagine 450 32 fords by the harbour in Victoria. Beautifull setting,relaxing and fun.
Don,nt know why but it never hits the glossy mags? Of the 900 cars there everyone was smiling.

(some of the best punk/rock-a-billy bands around here).
This is going to be a real deal car culture event.

Our old club back in MO had an entry fee of about $20 on the annual show. But the club was a non-profit organization so at the end of the year we would take a bunch of poor kids Christmas shopping with whatever we had left over. Not all the clubs are in it for the money.

(but we ended up leaving them because all the women started fighting over what color the club jackets were gonna be...and similar occurances involving club infighting and politics. )

 

Just so you know, this year the L A Roadster Show is only giving FREE admission to the driver this year - passengers will be $20.00 each.

What the Hell does that mean - the same event (Hot August Nights) in Reno NEVADA costs more.

There is one show that I know of in California (Seal Beach) that does have two price levels as described. $50.00 regular entry, $75.00 Premium. It seems to have worked for them, although i have never been to the show

Although I sort of agree with you Brad, the other side of the coin is this - When you go to say a concert, you pay admission to see the show and the band gets paid to entertain you. But at car shows they charge the entertainers (the show car owners) and let the public in for free. Seems a little back wards in some respects doesn't it?

 

Car shows cost a lot to put on, even more so anywhere near LA. Someone gets to pay those costs, and its silly to think that they'll all just eat it so that you have a show to go to. Not only that but it also takes a lot of time and effort to get it all done and make it a smooth deal when you roll up to the door. Some of us do it for a living, 50 hrs a week, and getting paid is not unreasonable at all. You probably get paid for whatever you're doing 40hrs a week too. I would hazard a guess that most people on the HAMB like to got to car shows at least occassionally and have fun doing it. Don't expect it to be totally free all of the time.

All that being said there is a huge difference between a promoter making a living charging a reasonable fee and a promoter taking advantage and trying to ring every cent out of the participants. HAN, at its height, was taken over by non car guys that are only looking at it from a $$ point of view. They had a full event and a waiting list to get in so they did what thier market economics handbook said to do - raise the prices on everyone everywhere. I hear things have been a little slow over the last couple of years in RENO, no more waiting list etc. I know the swap meet hasn't been much good, but the origional swap meet promoter (who was kicked down the road by the new HAN bosses) has moved his deal to ARCO Arena in Sac and is doing great. Plus LA is different from RENO, there are so many really good shows for us to go to almost every month. I'm not so sure that the $150 is going to work out for them when we can go to WCC, LARS, Grand National, Cruzin for a Cure, Monthly Swap Meets (Pomona, LB), etc for way less than that. The HAN fellas truly believe that they'll have 6000 cars at 150 and another several thou more waiting to get in. I doubt it, its just not a good deal. Non of those HAN guys has probably ever driven a car to a show and paid to get in, so they really dont understand where the line is between reasonable and not. An example of just how ignorant they are of LA and our kind of people....... they origionally had a registration cut off of November 2010 for the Aug 2011 LB HAN - and a warning that if you didn't get yourself registered by Nov you werent getting in. Who the hell registers for a new car show almost a year in advance? In thier case only a couple hundred or so I hear.

If you're around Long Beach the first week of Aug you can always come out and see us at the Long beach Swap Meet...... it's only $8 to drive your hot rod into the event (which we think is reasonable).

And to the OP'er........ the $150 is a bargain compared to other HAN values like paying $50 to be a volunteer (yes - a worker) - seriously it's on thier website, they are charging for the oppurtunity to work for them.

I always decide if something is worth the price before plunking down the cash.
I've heard of HAN. The size, the costs, and the problems there.
I personally wouldn't go if they shipped my junk there and back, covered room, food and gas to cruise, and gave me a dozen t-shirts.
You gotta decide if it's a deal for yourself. This post is good only for the other great shows that have been brought up as examples of better deals.
For the guys and gals that do put on good shows, thanks for your efforts.

 

If the car owners weren't getting any benefit from it, you'd have a point. They show up because there is something THEY enjoy too. THEY are getting entertained as well.

If they weren't, they wouldn't go to it.

I hear this all the time with my swap meet: "You should let the vendors in free because people are paying you to come in and buy." "You should let the spectators in free because the vendors are making money off us."

My usual reply to that is "Think about who's paying for the crapper you'll be using, rather than having to hoof it over there to the tree line and hope you don't squat in poison ivy."

I get tired of hearing everyone complain that they're getting screwed by the show promoter, and how he (or his club) should do it all for free because the local church has a free show in their parking lot with food and door prizes donated by others for a tax write-off.

If you don't like paying for a show, there's are two very simple solutions: stay home, or start your own.
