I like the sign that says, "Don't touch this car unless you're naked".

Makes we wish I had the guts .....

Huh so only Gold Chainers have the right to tell people to not touch your car....So its not traditional to care about your car?

Sheesh! I tell people all the time not to touch my car! I guess I am a gold chainer!

There are arguments to be made on both sides of this discussion. I love people to look at our cars and ask questions, but get real nervous when they start poking around, opening doors, etc. I've been going to shows for lots of years and have seen some unbelievable acts of stupidity on the part of spectators..........kids jumping up on running boards, people getting into the cars, people putting their foot on the car while talking to you, people with dogs and bikes getting very close, people actually sitting on a car fender, etc. More than once I have come out of a store and found tourists sitting in my roadster, taking pictures of each other!

Just last week at a show a guy (who looked like he had a few) walked up and set his bottle on the rear tire of my kids rpu, and he kept it there for a long time. I debated about saying something because I didn't want to be a jerk, but the little guy on my left shoulder finally won out. I walked over, picked up his bottle and handed it to him, and said "here, thank you." I hated doing it, but if it fell off and into the bed it could have scratched or dented it, and we would be the ones stuck with the repair. Hate to be that way, but we all put a lot of work and money into our cars and some people just were not brought up the right way. I would NEVER touch another persons car, but that is just me.

  4. Those signs don't bother me as they are pointless here where the people touching the cars can't read or speak the language anyway. What was once the great area of the Rude has now changed to the ignorant and plain stupid. How I miss those days when you could tell people off in English. Respect is dead around here now.

  5. Me and my buddies call them "BRONZERS" basically the same deal except in south county they have spray on sun tans, and wave $100.00 bills at the 20 year old girls in the dance clubs that they are WAY to old to be hangin around at...haha

I know I don't have the guts. Have you seen some of the guys at car shows?

  7. One of my friends happens to be a three piece patch holder. He came out of a restaurant and finds a guy sitting his kid on my friends bike.

As he walked up to his bike he asked the guy who gave him permission to use his bike as a kiddy seat. The child's dad said "It's no big deal". My friend replied to him, "If I get on top of your wife would that be ok then?"

BTW, the guy's wife was taking a picture of the kid on the bike at the time.

  8. I like that ShadeTree, we have always been the same way. Open it up and let em in. My kids too know not to touch, but they sure love to drool, about the only thing my 5 yr old son does is poke a tire now and then, and I think the lil booger does it to see if I am paying attention. I remember the first round up we went to, We had just arrived on Congress, and my daughter was 6, we walked by the scorpion parked on the corner at the San Jose, we were taking it in, and the guys picked her up and set her in it, she was in heaven. Priceless pics from that.

I showed up late at a car show last night and there was only 1 car there worth looking at. I am sure a few nasty comments were made about my POS though.

    The HAMB has ruined me.

In addition to the do not touch sign, there should be another sign that says "don't bother talking to me, all the info on the car is on the poster that cost me $1000 to make and is color coordinated to the car and it's theme"

Exactly, For every guy who doesn't like the signs and feels offended by them there is another story like Cliffy's where someone has done something to the car that pissed people off.

Over the past 40 years I've seen the following.

The big lard assed gal at an event in the Texas Stadium parking lot who wouldn't get off a guys fender because she had paid her XX$$ at the gate and felt she could sit any place she wanted to. She got a police escort off the premises.

The young dad at the same event setting his kid on the fender of an early Ford so he could use it as a slide.

At several events, the old farts who want to open car doors and slam them so they can stand there and say "they don't make them like that any more".

The woman who sat her kid in a friend of mine's T bucket at a show that I put on so the kid could play with the steering wheel.

The guys who go though a parking lot show with their bicycles and don't get off the bikes to look in a car.

My own dad who I had to tell a number of times not to put his foot on running boards either mine or someone Else's.

Yes there are solid reasons why people put do not touch signs all over their cars.

But on the other hand there is a friend of mine who actually assigns someone in the group to stay with the cars when the others in the group walk off to look at cars or what not. With the the statement "stay here and guard the cars. They are also one of those groups who have so damned much clutter around the cars that guys don't feel comfortable getting close to them anyhow.

  14. no that doesn't annoy me... standard procedure for a really nice resto is stay about a foot away with my hands in my pockets.... if you spent 5k on a paint job and spent 2 days buffing / polishing it.. would you want a fingerprint on it? there are plenty of cars you can look inside of even touch, its the owners car... their call..... as for me.. I don't care.. you can sit in mine, touch em, what ever... my cars are drivers... so if I can't stop a bird from pooping on it i am not gonna stop someone from leaving a fingerprint....

    storm king, you nailed it!!
I have no problems with the well mannered kids and parents, but there are some people that are just too ignorant (mom running edge of stroller down side of NICE 36 fenderless Ford while talking on cell phone) or just mean (14 year old biker wanna be-leathers, keys on chain, running key down side of 69 Chevelle, trying to impress girl friend.) for me to want to go anymore.

I couldn't agree more. Of course if your idea of 'traditional' is primer and rust, then WGAF if it gets touched, I guess.

The adults are usually worse than the kids. And what's with idiots and bicycles and skate boards?

I have a gold chainer friend who has some beautiful cars. Once at a local cruise night he was leaning up agaist an old dirty van that was in the parking lot. I asked him, exuse me is that your van? He said sorry and stepped away. After he saw it was me he started writing bad things about me in the dirt on the van. I stood back and laughed, it wasnt my van.

my last GF would go to shows with me, i was the first guy who took her to car shows, knowing that i told her the owners of some cars dont want people touching they rides, well she would be touching them and rubbing her hands on them, pressing her hand on the windows so she could see inside and useing her feet to point out things on the fenders and bumpers and well i couldnt relax, trying again to tell her the un-written rules about not messing with people cars went no where, telling her she just kicked a car that may have a $30,000 paint job, saying maybe you could not bring that hand bag the size of a suitcase with 30 keys hanging off of it, i wasted my breath, she never changed.

that's funny. The chainers with the signs on their cars are usually the ones that use my car as a seat, leaning post, desk(to fill out titles or phone #'s),table for their beer or to put ketchup on their hot dogs. I guess cause my falcon is just an old "field car":D

My car doesn't have a "DO NOT TOUCH" sign at shows.

    Because it goes without saying...

    Dont touch the fucking car.

  25. The reason we have signs are because some people (including their kids), don't seem to have enough brains, or common sense to figure out the obvious on their own. I've never posted up a sign, yet I fully understand why some people do it. "To each their own"..until it negatively affects me and mine.

I was showing my 62 at a Starbird show. The bikini Team girls were putting on a show near my car when a person who I recognized as a Corvette owner leaned on my car. I got out of my chair, never said a thing, and when He came back to his Vette,I was sitting in it. He seemed irratated over that! Go figure!

Side note, the 62 finished in the top 5 and the Corvette never got a mention.

Well i use to be one of those guys that when i got to a show or cruise night that i would get out my lawn chair and just sit behind the damn thing and just guard it! Then i finally realized at one car show watching other owners of nice cars who got pissed off big time because their car didn't win a damn trophy, that this was not for me. I built another car and this one is in primer and not finished to this day and if i go to a show or cruise night i just park the damn thing and walk away. I enjoy it a hundred times more than parking my finished car and guarding it all the time. I don't mind anybody touching it or even sitting in it if that is what gets them off..... my 2 cents.......

Dogs---- why can't people leave the grass crapping ___wheel pissing ___paint scratching ankle bitters at home. Maybe I need to bring my pet prize bull over to their house to shit and piss all over so they can step in it.
If your blind or need the dog for a valid reason other than company put it in a kennel. Rant over--thanks for your patience I feel better now.
