I saw that too. There is a little info on the Vanderbilt Cup Races site.

Sidney Breese also had a brother, Robert, who built the Breese-Paris between 1921-25.

Same B.L.M. or two different cars? Chain drive/shaft drive, and different gas tanks.

    Both are chain-driven Bob.

    Different wheels also.

No sign of lower chain run on car in top photo.

I looked through my list of events between 1914-1918 and only found one White.

1917 Kern County Fairgrounds - Bakersfield, CA.
    1 Mile dirt oval -
    15 Mile Bakersfield Sweepstakes -

3rd - White - no discription of automobile

There were many big name racers at this meet. Oldfield, Chevrolet, Hearne, Milton and Mike Moosie.

It might be a good idea to search for a newspaper article.

Kurtis....Thanks.... the track in the background appears to be a one mile oval
and you can see advertising on the fence. All kind of fits together.

Evolution and history of single seater racing cars, would some of you kind people tell me something about this, is Indianapolis responsible for the first ever with the rear view mirror car? Excuse my ignorance, but the matter does intrest quite a few friends of mine.
    Thank you in advance.

The first person to suggest using a (hand held) rear view mirror was Dorothy Levitt, in her book "The Woman and The Car", published in 1906. But the first person to actually fit one to a racing car does seem to have been Ray Harroun.

The early 1900 Locomobile steamers had a "rear view" mirror to allow the driver the check the water level sight glass mounted on the side. I wonder if allowed a view of traffic behind him. :)

Remember Monsieur Stapp and his monster record car?

I was idly browsing through the Mary Evans Picture Library and came across this painting:

Interesting archive, actually. All watermarked and small formats, but includes a lot of stuff you won't find elsewhere. A simple search under "motor racing" returns 363 pictures.

Thanks Keith. I notice he has some motorcycle information on that great site i haven't seen before.

Not many folks enjoy looking at photos of fatalities but the wrecked Bugatti driven by Rudolph Steinweg at the Guggen Mountain Climb is interesting as there seems to be very minimal damage to the car. I often wondered if he was related to BMW motorcycle racer Leo Steinweg, a Jew who later died in a concentration camp.

There is some footage of Stapp driving the behemoth through the streets of Paris.

Thanks for the link. The Paris-Madrid photos make it worthwhile.
