the first year ford outsold chevrolet since 1927

There were some fast 57 Chevy's back then, but Jim Butler's 57 Ford outrun them all down here in Texas...

in 1957 I drove a '32 Ford roadster with a 4:71 blown 3/8X3/8 flathead with Potvin cam, speed-o-motive pistons and dual carbs. Kids daddy bought him a 57 Ford with the blower. His was a red convertible. Caught him at a trafic light one Satuday night and decided to take him down a notch. Blew my doors off. Thats when I started using Olds, Buick and later sbc. Can't beat'em join 'em

what i dont understand is why they put it on the anemic YBLOCK when the fE was introduced that year.. the FE would have given alot more power and durability.

  10. I just sold a 57 Vic sport cpe fact 312 holley 4-V damn sweet ride.corel over white over corel, black tuck and roll.

  11. Y blocks can run, and the FE came out in 58. probably because NASCAR banned the blowers, when Ford brouht the SOHC to battle the Hemi's Nascar banned them too.

I would like to know if the are true E cars or not. When new from the factory they would run B GAS at out strip. Very rare in the full size cars anymore but still a few E and F' around in the t-birds. I meant to say F not E F we super charged and E had dual 4 Barrells.

The body may be original but the engine compartment is a long way from original. I had a 57 Custom 300 in 64 with a 427/425 & T10 4 speed out of a factory light weight 63 galaxie that was rolled. It was a killer street ride in its day, & the engine is a bolt in. The hi-po cast iron headers were a different story, people say they wont fit but my car had them. Send me a PM if you want to know how to do it., its too much to list here

Anyone remember the "Freeway Hot Shot" experiment in SoCal law enforcement circa 1957 where they were going to install supercharged 312's in tired '56 police cars for pursuit vehicles? I remember it only in the news papers.

1957 Ford factory prepared Y block 312 cars. They were at most drag strips digesting their fair share of competitors cars too. Feast your eyes on these photo's. Properly prepared they are still a contender in their Class.

The carbs were probably Holley "Teapot"
style 4-bbls. They were were used on
4-bbl equipped Fords and Mercurys in
    the early & mid-50's. In '57, a factory
2-4bbl setup, using the "teapot" style
Holley 4-bbls carbs was an available
    option on 312-powered T-birds and
    passenger cars.

I remember there was a guy in Denver Named Larry Walker who ran Stock class at the drags it was a blown 57 wagon I believe. The chevy guys complained that he had an advantage especially at high altitude. Pikes peak in 57 was dominated those blown fords.

The only way a 57 Chevy might out run a 312 would be because the driver of the Ford was not much of a "driver"!! Been there, kicked some bow tie butt!!The bow tie crowd cries foul every time Ford comes out with a fast combination!! ROY.

Hear, hear! Been enduring this for 55 years now, since "The 'hot one' was even hotter!"
    I had a warmed-over '56 Ford 292/T86 that made bowties a steady diet.
    Excuses abounded...
