S10 Blazer Axle

Everyone talks about the S10 4x4 axle swap into the 40-50's chevys. Anyone know if the blazer width is the same as the truck? found a 1984 4x4 blazer, didn't know if that would work.

 

I'd like to know too, so posting so I can keep track of this thread. Also, the 4x4 axle is supposed to be stronger.....true?

 

dont know about the strength, but from what I understand is that the 4x4 is a bit longer then the 2-wheel version.

 

All S10's are the same although the 4x4's are a little wider.

Full size trucks and SUV's are a different animal...

 

I know one is longer, but don't remember which is which. My buddy put one in his 50 Chevy 9 years ago, we also put a couple in some other cars, including a 53 Chevy wagon and I have one in my 47 Chevy panel truck. As far as strength goes that depends on the engine you are using. The one in the 50 has a 305 with a mild cam, aluminum intake 600 carb and headers. My bubby has had no problems with the rear end in 9 years and he has driven it all over, including 4 trips to Back to the 50's in St Paul from the Chicago area. Now if you are going to use a motor with over 500hp I don't know, but if you are building a cruiser to drive with a mild motor it should be no problem.

 

Yep I've swapped S10 Blazer/Jimmy and S10/15 axles between trucks. There all the same at least from 82 up to 84 and then 95 to early 2000 ish. The gear ratio's from the 4.3L trucks are usually 3.42 those are the ones I like.

 

The 2 wheel drive s10 and blazers are 54.25 inches flange to flange and the 4 wheel drives are 58 inches flange to flange.

I just bought an S-10. during my search I talked to a dealer who did "fleet' vehicles... lots astro vans, but he also had a few S-10's as well. he told me they have a problem with the pinion bearing in the rear ends going out. just something to check for when looking at rear ends. I actueally drove an Astro Van with a howling rear end so there must be some truth to it.

 

your right - half way thru the second page i found a post that halfway thru you actually noted they are the same.

Knew it was a 4x4 axle, just wasnt positive about the blazer aspect. my appologies.

 

...try to stay away from any 1994 S-10 rear axle, this was the style change-over year and that axle is all by itself, the axle shafts only fit that year.

 

I am using a 90 s-10 blazer rear for my 32 project. The 4x4 are a little bigger, check out this link and read down for some good info I used while shopping around.

A quick check of the two axles that I have show the 2wd to be right at 54" and the 4wd to be 59". I'm not certain if all years are exactly the same.

If you're shopping the salvage yards for your s10 or blazer axle, you might want to check in the glove box and look at the RPO codes to see what rear axle ratio it has. I've jotted down a few that I take with me when I go to my local pull a part so that assuming the axle hasn't been changed, I know what ratio I'm getting.

GU2 2:73 ratio
GU4 3:08 ratio
GU5 3:23 ratio
GU6 3:42 ratio
GT4 3:73 ratio
GT5 4:10 ratio

There may be some other codes, but these were the ones that were of interest to me.

And if you see G80 along with one of the above codes it is a limited slip, positraction or whatever GM calls them these days.

A complete rear(disc or drum) at my local pull your own parts yard runs about $75.

S1O ZR2 Model, off road package, has all half ton drivetrain, knuckles axles. The rear axle is wider.

I recently did the same research looking for a rear axle for the 35 chevrolet in my sig.I found the s10 four wheel drive rear axle would be a good fit for my truck.

 

A G80 axle option in a S10 is likely a Gov-Loc,not thought to be durable for performance limited slip.The newer S10's had a lifted 4x4 opt, XR-2.These had the much stronger 8.5 inch 10 bolt rear axle with disc brakes.This axle is said to be nearly 4 inches wider than a regualar S10 axle,don't know if they mean wider than the allready wider 4x4 axle.

 

When swapping internal parts there is a HD version of the S-10 rear that has 28 axle splines instead of the normal 26...I found out the hard way..... early 90's

 

can also find info at s10forum.com- to id rearend when not with vehicle is either numbers on the top of housing and/or on ring gear-have not confirmed this-see them listed often already out of chassis-any more info on this?

 

use the 4x4 any s-10,s-15,bravada.

I just picked up a 2000 4X4 Blazer rear axle and it measures 63" not 58".

 

well i bought 10 of them the other day at u-pull half price day i have 54,58,60,63 inches and 7.5 ring and 8.5 ring got all 10 of them for 250$

 

The pinion (on mine) is stamped with the ratio, see pix.

 

Keep in mind there are two bolt patterns on S10 trucks! The early ones with 5x4.75", and later that are 5x5".
