I have a photo of Dick in the Vargo sprinter...

I can make you a copy, if you want one.

An e-bay find. Caption says 7-14-1957 Los Angeles speedway. I assume this means Ascot?

Any West coast guys able to make car and the driver ID?

  6. Thanks guys. Most of the nickels no longer have a date on them, they are worn fairly bad to that point. I'm getting them @.50 cents per.

The nice ones are $3.00!-That adds up quick when I'm broke.

I`m a coin collector. Just as an aside, the fellow who said Buffalo Nickels had silver content is mistaken.

I believe he confusing them with the Jefferson "War Nickels" from 1942 thru 1945 which do have some silver content.

Buffalo Nickels are very common to have the date worn off as it sat on a raised portion of the coin.

The last Ascot was originally named L.A. speedway. The first sprint car race I attended (Gilchrist memorial, can't remember the year), the sign said, "Welcome to the new Ascot Park" so it must've been recently renamed. If I recall, the logo had an indian head incorporated into it. It was a looooong time ago.

I believe that's Allen Heath- Look closely behind the windshield and you'll see his hook. That's definitely the type of helmet he wore- all the way up to his retirement in '64.

Dick Linder was in a Jake Vargo owned Champ car when he went over the turn 3 & 4 guard rail at Trenton. I can still recall watching his car go over the fence, in an almost like "slow motion" way. If I'm not mistaken, one of the wheels came back up and over the fence, onto the track. Anyone else on this site there that day, too - April 19, 1959?

Some were built with the bars outside the body, others were not.

    Jerry,

Yes, I agree, don't know the builder of the car but records indicate the #24 was known as the "Willie Childers Offy". He won the 30 lap feature at Bakersfield - July 20, 1957. Allen was 5th in points as driver and Childers was 9th in points as car owner in 1957.

What jumps out to me about the 24 car is the engine setback!

1957 CRA stats show Allen Heath 5th in points with 4 wins, one of which was at Bakersfield on 7/20 in the #24 Willie Childers Offy.

    Gearguy,
When you fly into Philly, more often than not you go over Bridgeport Speedway in NJ. Ironically, it is a large half mile. I can not think of a smaller track in the area.

Kinda looks like they stretched it the same way Caruso stretched his midget - in front of the engine.

Definitely in Delaware County just at the edge of the airport complex. It didn't look like a running track.

I should have checked Google Maps. I think it was the Chester Casino and racetrack.

    Joe,

There is also a 1/4 mile track at bridgeport just south of the big track. ARDC has run a few times on the 1/4 mi. track. It`s on the same grounds.

TommyA19, I saw the Linder crash and nothing came back up on the track. I saw the car as it lay on our way out of the fairgrounds. The car hit on the slope of the banking berm and rolled.

Baldtireman- I never saw a supermod race so I am no help.

I remember people telling me that Mac's car was a former Deb Snyder car that competed in IMCA?

I believe this was also the car that Bill Thomas later purchased for Lou Blaney to drive as a team mate to Ralph Quarterson...

Had a warm sunny day here in Cincy so I rolled out the midget for some pics. It has been a while since I have done an update. Have not really had a lot of time to dedicate to it this winter but did finally get some work done here and there.

The chassis is pretty much done, just needs the brake lines run, ever thing else is on it is rebuilt and ready to go. Engine is on its way the the machine shop so it should be done here in a month or so. Body is finished, just needs final sanding and paint.

Deb Snyder`s car was a Hillegass. I have some photos of it with Blaney in it. I have the car.
