There is a four page article about Phil Bonner in this weeks National Dragster. Phil was interviewed for almost two hours for this article and it includes a ton of photos. Check it out...

Just an observation..... I was wondering why it seems ford used mainly the 2 door sedan for their racing, and mercury mainly used the hardtop? Is this a wrong perception?

I know it's not a drag car, but I thought you guys might like to see this one from Craigslist:

Another"RARE" Comet Ranchero!! I have a bridge for sale,CHEAP too!!!! There must be a lot of misguided people out there!!! ROY.

  19. Comet Ranchero? I've never heard of one but do know some falcon parts (ie doors in 65) were very close to Comet's. Looks to me like a comet Front end on a Falcon.

Did Ford-Merc really make such a car?

NO Comet Rancheros built by Mercury!!!! Falcon and Comet doors from 64-65 will interchange, the only difference is trim and door panels. The core support even has the same part number, headlight openings for 65 Comets are not punched out but other than that same stuff.I put a 65 Comet 2dr door on a 65 Falcon Ranchero. I was doing 11.85 in my 64 Cyclone with a 4.71 gear and a 4 speed,289 30 over,12.5 CR with a long duration small lift solid lifter cam, ported and polished heads with (gasp) Chevy 1.94/1.60 Manley valves, balanced and blueprinted, and shifting at 7,200 RPMs with a Holley 850 DP.Is your Comet heavy?Gotta watch that power to weight ratio...

Maybe it's a aerodynamic thing, the 64 is alot lower than yours.I cut a full coil out of the front coil and used the front wheelwells as a template for the rear wheelwells. Also,I was running at sea level on 110 octane.

Love this pic, too bad its a bit blurry. You can see Two 64 merc. Wagon tow vehicles. I think Jack always got the Colony park wagons and everyone else got the commuter wagon.Wish we could see the other Comet.Probably some promotional event out in Cali. somewhere. I would guess around The Sachs and Sons dealership. Does this look like Downey ,Ca to anyone.

This is the plan over the summer. Bought my 64 Commuter wagon last Summer. Have to go down to Fast Eddies Moms house in North Carolina to get it. Bought it 5 mins from there. Going to cruise locally in style. Or at least the guys that are in to nostalgia will get it, everyone else will wonder what the hell I'm doing. Heres some pics of the Wagon.

One day it will look like this one.

The commuter wagons are very hard to find. There happens to be one exactally like mine on Craigs list in Florida right now for someone who wants to do the same thing.
