17 inch tire on a 16 inch rim?

ok, I am assuming this is unsafe and a stupid question but there is 17" tire which I would love to run but I have 40 ford 16" steel wheels that I plan on using on my coupe. Is there any way to run a 17 inch Bias ply tire on a 16 inch rim?,,no friggin way right?

i made the mistake of using a 16.5 on a 16 inch wheel once.

Dont even try. Felt like the damn wheels were falling off at 20 mph

 

got it, won't do it...ok, are there any steel 17" rims that will match the ford ones I am running? I am looking to run some tall rear tires...

1940 ford 16" steel rims all around is what I have now, the reason why I am looking for a tall tire is that I am putting in a cadillac 500, lots of torque and no revs, the tallest gear I can fit is a 3.00..so I want some tall tires...

If you really want to have fun go find a 17" rim a try to put a 16" tire on it. Way ahead of putting a 17 on a 16.

 

I am sure there is a 17" wheel that will fit that bolt pattern.

The 17" tires will go on those rims easily, by hand. Holding air might be a bit of an issue.
You can get a pretty tall 16" tire that with 3.00's will not rev much at highway speeds. Or is 250 mph the goal?

 

no but I would like to be under 2500 at 75...and i think I need at least 34 inches total diameter..the other issue is that my terraplane has a really long rear tail and I think a tall tire would balance out the , I have found some tall tires but they are either military and probably as hard as a rock or drag tires and I would like my ST10 to survive.

 

dodge ram 1500 pick up has a 17 steel spare wheel that fits the 5x5-1/2 but it wont match the ford ones.

Agreed! Never use truck tires on a car. You have never used a 300 gear? you would be cruising at 75 well under 3000 rpm. The trans would be easy to change to an over drive unit when you are implanting the engine.

 

ok, ok, no truck tires.... what overdrive manual trans (that I can afford) can take the torque of the 500? I already have it set up for a ten spline input GM trans, I have an aftermarket super t10 with an Iron case lined up for $400 , I don't think I am going to be going with a T5, and a T56 I think is a bit much...

Thanks I ve looked pretty closely at the coker website but I had not seen those...thats actually how I found the super transport truck tires...

 

Both Mopar and Ford put manual shift 4 speeds in pickups with 4th gear being overdrive. In Mopar's case I think it was based on the 883 tranny, a pretty stout unit and Ford's, I think, was a Toploader derivative, also a strong gearbox.

Perhaps another HAMBer can provide greater details on these.

A few months back I posted a question about some of those truck 4 speeds, and we never came up up with exactly what pickup transmissions would be good, a few hambers thought that the 1st gear would be useless in most of them, and that I wouldn't be happy with the gear ratios in general...but maybe combined with a tall rearend it might work.

 

I think that "useless" first gear applies to the HD 4 speeds found in some 1/2 ton and most 3/4 ton and up trucks, but that IS NOT what these are.

TRhe two I referred to are essentially HD paessenger car 4 speeds that originally were for muscle cars, but during the enono crunch days of the 80's they were redesigned by their respective factories to make 4th OD instead of 1 to 1 ratio.

I am not saying that they are your best choice, only that they are worth looking into as a possible solution before you decide what will serve you best.

Thanks Ray! I'm going to go look at a P code super T10 tomarrow in a steel case it might do the trick with the 3.00 in the rear.

two pages? no you can't run a 17 on a 16 rim and drive it. jeez

You can buy tall 16 inch tires from diamond back like around 32" tall. That puts you 3K cruising speed way on up there.

 

It will work, just put a tight rope or belt around the tire before you mount it.
