What I mean is, car clubs that still stay true to what the original car clubs were founded on. A few guys that hang out together with their cars, go to shows/cruise nights etc, have a place or rent a place to work on, clean, store their cars. Some clubs to me now a days seem snobby or stuck up, are all about how many cars they can get at a show.
The Iron Lords consist of 10 member who are all great friends and we all rent a shop where we can work and help each other. We host parties a couple times a year and have a SHOP NIGHT every wednesday where anybody can stop by and hang out. It's been really successful for us in terms of gathering people in the area together to enjoy cars as well as provide a productive outlet for many of us to share our passion. All I can say is that we are all best friends that not only help each other on cars but with anything. These are the dudes I would call to help me roof my house and the guys that I would do anything for. The people that hang at the shop who are not members are also very important to us as they provide the friendship and fuel for us to provide a place an events for everyone to gather around. It's a community really and we all play a huge role.
There's lots of those clubs. The Indy Road Rockets are an example. Great traditional car guys just having fun.
Don't ask to be in a club. Just hang around and become friends and if it's a good fit they'll ask. I always tell people that being in a club is work and that you really have to want to put effort into making it better. We give just as much help car wise to people that are not in the club as people that are. The members are more or less required to follow a set of rules which means meetings, dues, and work.....but I also would gladly do those things to be a part of something bigger then myself. So I guess to sum it up, if you are hanging around a club and you appear to be an asset rather then a liability along with having the same mindset then only time should stand in your way. The Iron Lords have a 3 page rule book that guides us as a club and our cars but it's really only there as a formality since we all believe those rules to be no brainers from the get go.
We got a lil club here in Stl its the, H8R's and its five of us that all hangout, theres a rented shop space to hang at and get a few beers, All are traditionally styled cars and its about just hanging with pals and getting some work done on the ride! most of these boys that can make it help me crew at the HAMB Drags. 3 of the guys are custom guys and 2 of us are hotrodders looking for that last tenth! lol
we tried to start one here, all off topic cars but the attitude was the same, and what ended up happening was two or three would do the work and the rest contributed none. old skool club are a thing a beauty when they work though. you can tell when the people involved want to be around each other and are not there just to show off their car.
I have to agree with you. Most of the club members I have met in the Houston area are kick ass guys that seem to go out of their way to accommodate people and grow the "scene". I know a good fellow down here that "bleeds lime green" and he's always helped me out, even when i was totally clueless!!! I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the guidance and kindness of total strangers like him.
Aside from the club garage you pretty much described the road ratz. Started by a bunch of old flathhead racers up in Minisotta eons ago. still pretty much the same as they have alsways been. Actually the Pharos from St Jo are pretty much like that also. A little younger than the average road rat, pretty tight knit group good folks. Both clubs were trad when trad wasn't cool.
I honestly never heard of these open shop parties or things like that. I wonder if there's any in the North Ga area?
We are. My brother and i started the Bishops about 5 years ago, and we're up to 10 people. All the best of friends and close knit family. We do, however, get a little rowdy some times.
Roadratz and the st joe boys all cool hung with both and I,m a old fuc I guess but true to the hobby too man plastics around now dont know what they want!!
The Vallejo Swanx had been a dormant club for 38 years when we restarted it in 1998. We have tried to emulate the old club, but its a different world out there now. There isnt much chance today (in CA, anyway) of getting the Police Dept. or CHP involved in safety checks or having them escort your caravan to a show. We too are a close knit group that takes pride in our cars and in our members helping one another out on projects. We arent the mean mugging, tough guy type of club that you see now-a-days...just an approachable group of friends with the same interests...anyone is welcome to hang out, attend meetings, etc...possibly to be invited to join if they fit in with everyone.
The Satan's Chauffeurs of Merced are a group of about 15 guys that eat, sleep, and breath old cars. We all work on eachother's cars and it works well since we are all good at different things. There are a few of us with shops so depending on who has an open stall at the time that's where we work. Our cars are all traditional style rods and customs and we drive the crap out of them. If there isn't a show to go to we'll hop in our cars and head out of town for a meal just for an excuse to drive. I think it goes beyond old cars for us though. I know I could call any one of our members at any time if I needed something and they'd be there quick.
There are Road Ratz in Illinois, as a rule you don't find them they find you. Its not a club you just go and join. As I recall most of the clubs when I was young you didn't just go join. They normally didn't have membership drives and they were never boy scouts as a rule. You knew someone or met someone who knew someone or was one and then it just kind of went from there.
yeah here in the nor cal area there are a ton. Like the skulls, poor boys, alley cats, and beatnicks who are all pretty traditional, not just a "lets see how many we can get" idea behind them
Old skool club! Wish there was one around here. I'm still stuck on the idea that the cut off should be the same proposed here on the HAMB. But someone always wants to edge it up to 60's muscle cars. Then 70 isn't that much further and then you are up to 74 and it goes on from there to anything with fuzzy dice. Still enjoy cruising and spotting other cool rods to gather with on the spur as the best way to meet up. Other rods with REAL bugs on the front of the car that is.
Im a member of the Tiki Kings here in NY. This club really is what a club should be. Good friends who enjoy hot rods and good times. The club really stepped up for me when the flathead bit the dust a few days before the Rumblers show last summer. We came together to put a new engine and trans in the car in just a few nights because they refused to let me miss that show. We do the same for all club members that need work done. Even in the dead of winter we started doing "garage night" once a week just to hang out. If no one needs any work we all hang out in the garage and watch old hot rod movies or old horror movies. Great guys. I'm glad to be a part of it
