I got inspired by the candy and lace thread. You don't see that much if at all in Ok so I figured I would be different.

Damn... after 5 years I finally got new floors in the driver's side and passenger side foot wells of the Suburban... holy crap, it's quieter and getting into a truck that has real, solid floors instead of thin sheetmetal tack welded over a huge hole is really a strange feeling!

zipp: my friend was a mechanic. when we were young his dad owned a gas station in detroit. i was interested in the trans out of his 58 after he rolled it and inquired. he said it was a 4sp auto with a torque tube. i assumed it was original as was the rest of the truck. that's all i know....

This is a picture thread, not a tech discussion, but I'll break protocol. Someone wrote earlier about autos being available in '58, they are usually in V8 equipped trucks. Your Wikipedia article actually states the same, your not reading it thoroughly. My truck had a 6 originally and is a small hump trans cover, and column shift 2 spd (power glide) 6 cyl usually were standard trans. The first 4 spd auto truck (stock) I have seen is in a GMC, this trans is very different from a modern turbo hydro-matic, which arrived in trucks in 1967. Google the trans history and truck history if you need more info.

Here's some truck pictures (not mine) to stay legit to this thread.

The guy that owns this truck lives here in the High Desert. It looks much better than the pictures show.

Well, this weekend I found out it is a 63-65 Vette hi=perf. solid lifter 327 motor. Wont be needing brakes , but brake hoses. This thing has a solid frame driveline. I'm stoked. has 382 heads , and we are going to measure the lift on the cam to see if this guy knew what he was doing. Has some push rod guides on it, you could eat off the insides.:D

Quick question for all the guys in-the-know with these trucks.

I'm currently talking to a guy about trading an OT pickup for his '66. It's got a 4-speed, 'farmer' bumper and 6-lug wheels, this would be a 3/4 ton correct?

My 65 truck was a C-20 with 8 lug wheels.

    The 1/2 tons had 6 lug. 3/4 I believe had 8 lug.

Jshaw That truck looks sweet! I'm gong back and forth between a variant of the red on mine and a green real close to that! That color on there looks awesome.

Not necessarily. My '66 is a half ton, but its got all those things. Although I'm not 100% sure thats the original transmission, the opening in the cab floor has been hacked up in the past. It has the work type bumper and 6 lug wheels though.

A 3/4 ton will have 25 as the 3rd and 4th numbers in the VIN, 1/2 ton is 14 or 15.

I'm also pretty sure the 3/4 tons have 8 lugs, but not 100% sure.

**Edit, looks like Nova Tattoo is faster on the draw than me...

All Chevy and GMC 1/2 ton trucks had 6 lug wheel from the 40's up to 1970. 1971 was the first year they had the 5 lug wheels for the two wheel drive 1/2 trucks but the 4x4's kept the 6 lug wheel. All the 3/4 tons have the 8 lug wheels. HTH
