Ted was on the USAC tech committee and pretty much had a lock on the Indy car wheel business. An aircraft engineer, Fred Puhn designed a two piece bolt together aluminum wheel that was an instant success with SCCA racer types. He formed a company in National City called Monoquque (SP?) Engineering. Several indy car teams tried them out, but they never could pass tech as long as Ted sat on the committee.

I know there are companies that can and still do magnesium casting, but it is an entirely different beast now. the casting process has changed so much from what they were doing back then.
The Halibrand name is still owned and operated under a different company (they changed it to Halibrand Peformance afer they put Halibrand Engineering into bankruptcy) so any reproduction of past castings and patterns would have to be done by them or licensed through them assuming the patterns were owned by them and it were to carry the Halibrand name.

Pulled this Halibrand pattern from a trash pile at Jackman Wheels a long time ago. I was told that it was for a Scarab. However, after looking at the photos on another post today, I don't see anything that matches. If this was the center section, was the rim cast as a separate piece?

A great thread goin' on here! The most beautiful wheels ever made. Man, I see those wooden patterns and I wish that's something I knew how to do....castings. Now that's an art! In this CNC age we live in now, a programmer can scan something and program a lathe/mill and pump out thousands of wheels today without even getting dirty. I'd venture to say that I consider myself a pretty good and competent machinist, but I am very envious of someone with the ability to make a pattern and pour molten metal into beautiful shapes. Now that is an artform!

Regarding the "too complicated to cast in the US" theory......The aircraft industry regularly produces magnesium castings significantly more difficult than anything ever used for automotive wheels or axles. Lack of domestic production signifies a cost issue, not a lack of ability.

Cool thread, much to be learned reading thru

I'll need to look through my old Bonneville Salt Flat photos (if I can find them)...I think there are plenty of pics of rods running solid Halibrands in the collection...

Harry Jackman bought the company when it technically split.
ARC took most if not all of the racing products and Jackman wheels took the wheels.
Thanks for the info on the Patterns.

There has got to be more out there?

Adams sprint cars were equipt with the best halibrand stuff for cra(ascot). I have the last adams car built and the jigs + the mold for the hood...way ahead of its time...Mr adams may have some interesting tales if you contact him.....

Bump because I like this thread and I am tired of the whole not contributing note on the top of my log in reminding me what a lazy person I have been. :)

Interesting thread. I know at one time Greg Weld(R.I.P.) had a Halibrand Indy car. It was stored at the old wheel plant in the Kansas City west bottoms. I last saw it in the mid '90's. Don't know what became of it or many of the other Weld keepsakes that were stored at the plant.
