My guess is oil, grease, or animal fat (lard).

Torch...hammer...leverage...pretty much everything I still use when I don't have silicon and WD-40.

  8. I don't know how old you are but I'm 60 years old and I know WD-40 was introduced in 1953 so it's been around almost as long as I have.HRP

  9. how rusty could stuff have been when it was only 10-30 years old?

  10. We used to mix kerosene with a little used motor oil to use as penentrating lube.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

Often, a torch and BFH did whatever we wanted done. Fortunately, there was a lot of replacement parts in wrecking yards to replace the parts we screwed up with the sad combination of heat, a BFH, youth and enthusiasm.

You obviously don't live in the rust belt. Lot's of bolts snap or need heated to be removed in 10 year old cars around here.

I've gone to using acetone/atf mix for penetrent now. Works great, just don't have a way to spray it.

I always seemed to have a can of 3 in1 around when I was a kid along with some other rust pentitrating stuff but didn't have Wd-40 until later. Lots of 3M weather strip cement for sealing gaskets. Or Indian Head or permatex.

  16. You were building before the '50s?

Liquid Wrench and WD-40 have been around all my life.

  18. Sawzall, pfft! We cut stuff with two teenaged boys, a hacksaw blade, two pairs of ViceGrips™ and sweat.

A thought on the Topic. My Jeep Cherokee rear lock needed weekly shop of lube to work. While on vacation in Michigan last Oct the lock stuck after 4 days. Sprayed Pam cooking oil in the lock and has worked ever since. Maybe lard in the old days worked the same ????????

  20. I still won't use WD40. And only use silicone when I can't find a proper gasket to use with Permatex, pretty much the same as I have done the last half century.
