All '54 Mercs came with the same engine, 256 cubic inches (an inch bigger than the last year 255 flathead in '53). Bore was 3.62 X stroke of 3.10, 161 horsepower. In '55, all Mercs came with a 292, in '56 they all came with a 312, in '57 a 312 or the 368 Turnpike Cruiser engine.

 

I got 'em directly from the gender specific, Charlie Price, himself!

 

Very, very nice engine, never thought of a Y block that way! I may reconsider them!

 

Thanks, Fopelaez. The only drawback (and not a very big one) to the Y-block that I can think of is adjusting the valves.

...but that's what happens when you use intake valves for lifters.

this looks amazing, simple but smooth!

 

lol thats kinda what they look like! What also sucks is assembling the bottom end & timing set, covers etc but forgetting to install the lifters before installing the cam & timing set. That'll make ya say a bad word in a heartbeat. Its amazing what a person can do with a coat hanger and a coupla Budweisers.

 

I can see where forgetting the lifters before you get too far along would be cause for a couple F-bombs!!!! ROY.

 

There used to be a tool made for removing the lifters & reinserting them. However, as noted, ingenuity (fueled by Bud and the thought of having to tear the whole thing apart AGAIN) can solve anything.

BTW, a piece of PVC pipe cut in half lengthwise makes a nice tray for removing lifters.

 

Desperation makes one creative, thats for sure. I like the idea of the pvc, if I get ahold of a certain truck it'll be getting a Y-block, if I can find one over here that is.

 

Tedd glad to see your on the HAMB now. Your expertise along with Tim is greatly appreciated in the Yblock field.

Thanks to Petter Leddy for his work making it happen years ago.

I'd bring my supercharged '57 Ford sedan again.

 

1.2. & 3. 312 with 6x2s and Bud Elhart angled valve covers in my '56 Vicky

4.&5. 312 with ALL original Paxton Supercharger in my '57 "Fireball" car

6. Not finished (obviously) original Hilborn F.I. (141 made) to be in my '57 T-Bird "Battlebird"

Love those Bud Elhart valve covers. Saw a roadster with these on here in Vegas at the Viva Las Vegas Show a few years back. Wouldn't mind a set if I could ever find them.

For you guys that don't know Tedd, the engine he posted is his EMC motor that made 524hp at 6400 rpm on 91 pump gas. Oh and with a set of Mummerts alluminum heads.

Yes Tim quite an accomplishment for Tedd and his team at the EMC. I see the wife turns a wrench too?? Very hard to find a women like that.
