A peg leg and eye patch are cool too, but I wouldn't want them.

Chains require lube. Exposed chains sling the lube they require. Look at that cowl, its soaked in some sort of oil. Traditional + ridiculous = Ignorance.

As if its not bad enough having an exposed saw blade in the form of an open fan, lets add a chainsaw to it too.

You didn't say you wanted to see the chain, but this worked and was quiet and no oil on the firewall. Pat

 

Here's a SBC/Cragar setup I once owned (not on in this pic), wish I could of found the Howard's chain drive cover.

 

A lot of motorcycles have exposed chains and one would think in a vey bad position if they ever let loose. How come they aren't seen as a similar problem? RPM's I guess.

If you're looking to do it, most drive chain has a max speed rating in feet-per-minute. Easy enough to calculate and find a safe one.

I don't think I'd be comfortable with that much chain screaming around at 5000 rpm. The whip in it must be amazing.

If thats lube on the cowl from the chain, then judging by the pics there must have been some act of god to somehow miss the rad hose and the blower that are 6" from the chain. Prob. a float hung on a carb. I use a chain lube that dries quickly like a wax and wont fling off. Any how, more pics..

I wouldn't be all that scared of that.. after all there's one right behind the timing cover.. they go 300k+ miles.. without breaking.. maybe stretch out and eat a hole in something though. I can see running a chain drive for a blower.. especially if its a blower motor that's packed into an engine bay and doesn't have enough room to run a 3" wide belt....

 

It should work.
After all, many engines still have timing chains that see hundreds of thousands of miles.
In fact, some of the DOHC Japanese engines are going back to timing chains, because they last longer than timing belts. I believe the overhead cam Ford 427 had a twelve foot long timing chain.

I much prefer multirb or toothed rubber belts for my blowers.
But if space is at a premium, you could make a fancy timing cover extension to house the blower drive chain.
It would keep the chain clean and splash lubricate it from the front of the sump. It could also be the oil return from the blower drive gears. Never tried it, but it should be quite practical to do.

Anyone tried a gear drive ?

 

I have seen a few pretty old pictures of them, but they still look pretty rat roddy to me.

 

Do you have anymore pictures of this one?

Thanks for the response, lot of cool setups.

I’m planning to put a blower on a 59ab, I wanted to go for the v-belt but think I can save some space with chain. I have to make a mock up and check, don’t want an eclectic fan (AV8).
