What's YOUR idea of patina?

1. There's another thread asking "who's tired of patina?". So, what's YOUR idea of patina? Rusty garbage, or a reasonable amount of "use' on an older build? Post pics of just what your idea of "patina" is. IMO, this is NOT patina

Hard to tell but when you get close you can see all the crackling of the paint and the chips missing from certain areas. Obviously the firewall was just painted though.

And surely we could have this thread with out my good friend Chris' old Coupe...

Mel aka Dirtiest Devil's '32 Roadster. Not sure how much of the patina is real but all of it is awesome!

Also Chris' Roadster too. I think if this was anything other then a late 20' early 30's Ford it would be too much like the one you first posted Groucho, but seeing how it is I think it works perfectly. I know he plans to paint it but it looks great for now!

Patina is that stuff on your car while you save up to paint it properly. Rust is not patina, rust is rust and it is the natural ENEMY of the Hot Rod.

Doc.

My take on patina.

Notice the grasshoppers splattered on the front give it that summery feel.

Patina (pronounced /ˈpætənə/ or /pəˈtiːnə/) is a tarnish that forms on the surface of bronze and similar metals (produced by oxidation or other chemical processes); a sheen on wooden furniture produced by age, wear, and polishing; or any such acquired change of a surface through age and exposure. On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides or carbonates formed on the surface during exposure to the elements (weathering). Patina also refers to accumulated changes in surface texture and colour that result from normal use of an object such as a coin or a piece of furniture over time.

weathered orig. paint , old repaints , light surface rust , worn thru spots from years of washing and polishing , minor parking lot dings , rock chips , faded old pin stripes = GOOD

rusted thru holes , huge dents , ANYTHING faked , including lettering and door logos = CRAP

20. I love original Patina not so much on the Faux Tina. Fellow Swindler Paul did the interior and top on this roadster. It has awesome original patina. He even used old Packard leather for the interior. It is unreal how cool this car is.

Rust is not patina, it's rust.
Fake lettering & door art is fake.
Bare metal car is not patina.
Holes in metal is not patina.

It amazes me how many guys here are re-inventing the past- trying to convince others that rusty cars are just like back in the day.
BS. I was there.

Gray Baskerville's is one of the only cars I'd be caught in & I have to admit- It probably wouldn't stay that way long. The fenders would drive me nuts.
If the fenders matched the faded red body- perfect.

I have always liked the patina on my 49 Fleetline. Original cracked up black lacquer with some spray painted flames that someone painted on her a LONG time before I got her. I really dig the patina on these two trucks as well.

Thats my idea of patina. Patina should be viewed as war wounds that tell a story. Not some trend to make your car look legit. Anything like that that still has the original livery it last had when it was ran on the track should be preserved. Fix it so thats it's safe, isn't rotting away, and runs good.Other than that if you do have the urge to respray the vehicle put it back to its original paint scheme.

My Mom's 39 coupe. I beleive it was built in the 60's in Oregon somewhere. Paint looks new until you are 2 or 3 feet away...a bunch of little cracks.
