Official Metal Flake Steering Wheel Pic and ID Thread...

I'm looking for a gold metal flake one for my '64 Biscayne.

I noticed these wheels on EBAY, I figured they were the Mooneyes wheels being sold at SO-CAL.

 

2010 Christmas present

 

Dadstoy, I have one of those in solid white in my '64 PU. Thought it was a Cragar but it could very well be an old Grant. I got it from Muttley on here a few months ago. He had a pic of it on this thread on one of the first pages but the link is gone now.

 

This one does not have metal flake or chrome. Any idea of type or date of manufacture? The ID # is 9760296.

does anyone know if anyone made a purple one? i have a gold superior 500 now, but trying to find out if there were purple ones.

 

They made em', there is one hanging on my tree, lower branch!

 

Yeah MOON EYES USA had them at one point.Ive still got one in my stash..........flake was so-so compared to the old school and the new ones

this is my gold superior 500, but i got to have me a purple one, i must start looking and asking till i find one,maybe i will get lucky at turlock swap meet.

 

I found my red Superior 500 (the one in my avatar pic) at the Indy Super Chevy swap area a few years ago for $1. Someone had spray painted it black at some point, took me a lot of elbow grease but I got it looking pretty nice.

 

Sorry I don't have any pictures of the steering wheels but I have some picture of the place most of these wheels were manufactured. Bob Anderson was the brother in law and co owner of the orignal Covico wheel. They split and Bob formed Covilon, Covico of La Verne Ca. Bob let us kids use anything he had to build our own toys, GREAT man. For a guy that build gazillions of those wheels I don't own one today. I better start looking for a good one for my El Camino build.

Ok, so how "rare" are the 5 hole spoked, blue metalflake ones? I just bought one off of ebay, I'm GOOD with it (in case it's one of you guys, LOL), I needed a blue flake to go with the car, I did PAY for it. And as someone here said, you gotta step up if it is something you want. I see a 5 hole on the Christmas tree but have not seen any others........

i just recieved a 1966 1/2 Honest Charlie Speed Shop catalog.
And I now know about my metalflake steering wheel.
It's a GRANT 5 hole metalflake Royal Blue without finger grips.

hmm, good question.........

 

Joined the club this weekend! Got this Superior 500 at the local swap for a good price. It was pretty dirty so I sprayed it with some Gibbs and wiped 'er down. Sorry for the poor photos. It's sort of an aqua color, not sure that's because it was once blue and 'yellowed' with age or if it's the original color?? Anyways, here's a couple shots (the last one is where it currently resides, true artwork gets the top shelf!)

 

Consider hitting it with some cutting compound (by hand, it's softer than it feels), and then some polishing compound. Mine was brown until the cut, then green after that, but turned bright teal after the polish. I think the metal flakes at surface in the vinyl rust a bit, and turn a slight yellow cast, hence the green instead of teal. If it's like my no-name, once polished the flakes turn bluish, instead of gold/yellow/rust brown. After 8 years, mine is starting to turn green again.

Bought one identical to that off E-Bay a week or so back. It's going in my '58 Apache pickup. I was going to put it in my wife's '56 Ford but she didn't like it!

Would one of these wheels be proper in a 50's hot rod, or were they more of a 60's thing?

 

Thats the correct color, aqua, blue/green. I have one too. Also a blue one.
