rear end id

need help identifying this rear end. it's in my shoebox.

 

Looks like a GM 10 bolt.

 

thanks! are all gm 10 bolts the same width?

 

No if you own a shoe box you will be looking for a camero unit.

That one is broken?

Pop the cover off that could be as simple (and cheap) as a broken pin.

Oh I'm thinking first Gen Cameros are what the fellas use. Maybe someone else will straighten me out on that. V-8 Camero and 6 Cylinder both use the 10 bolt. The 6 cylinder will be taller geared as a rule.

 

i jacked the rear end up. the wheels spin, opposite directions. but my driveshaft does not spin. rear end?

 

Sounds like a busted pinion.

 

Hey you may have broken the pinion area... As far as rearends go you will need to measure backing plate to backing plate. The 67-69 are 2-3 inches narrower than the 70-up style. Now I can spill the beans on some info that some may know or not. In 1973 the v-8 novas came with the new style(stronger) 8.5 inch rear end but was the narrower 67-69 width. If you choose to hunt this down this housing will accept the posi units out of the 78-81 Camaro z-28s. As opposed to the nearly obsolete early style unit. Also some 67-69 Camaros came with 12-bolt rearends which are quite rare and valuable. Good Luck either way you go.

 

Looks like you had quite the pinion seal leak ... was there any fluid left in it when you opened it up?


It does look to be a 10 bolt Chev ... they came in a lot of different vehicles and lengths. I ran a 1980 Camaro 10 bolt in my coupe and changed to a 1968 Camaro 10 bolt because it is 1" shorter/narrower.

There were also a couple of different ring gear sizes in 10 bolts. I know of the 7.5", 8.2" and the 8.5". There could be more.

If by "shoebox" you mean 55-57 Chev the I think the rear that you want will be a 67-69 Camaro or 68-74 Nova. Check your length and then Google "rearend widths" and you should be able to determine what it is most likely out of. If it is early Nova/Camaro then you also need to determine whether you have the 8.2 or the 8.5 if you are intending to fix the one you have.

Measure yours (some people measure from the backing plate to backing plate ... I prefer to measure from axle flange to axle flange), this will give you the true width of the rear. Go to google with your measurements and search "rearend width". Poke around on google and you will find a chart listing many vehicles and their rearend widths. Should give you an idea what it came from.

i measure mine from where the wheel mounts and go about 57" or so. still had the wheels on so maybe lost half an inch or so messing with the tape measure. D5AW-B is stamped on the axle if that helps.

 

a 4x4 s10 rear looks like itll work?

 

s10 diff is a 7.5 ring ,, just dont be using a trans brake, it'll probably handle 400hp as long as you dont hammer it all at once

 

im not anywhere near that kind of power haha. i just have a stock 302 in it. found a 4x4 rear on CL, gonna go pick it up.

 

should be fine strengthwise, long as it fits,,

Universal joint U-bolts on a chevy rear?
Might be a Ranger rear. 4.5" x 5 bolt pattern?

 

How about a 1989ish Lincoln Mark VII rear end... Has rear disc brakes, 5-lug and it's a Ford rear end...
