Timothy Francis Leary.. "A hugely controversial figure during the 1960s and 1970s, he encouraged the use of the drug LSD for its therapeutic, emotional and spiritual benefits, and popularized the phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out", both of which proved to be hugely influential on the 1960s counterculture. Largely due to his influence in this field, he was attacked by conservative figures in the United States, and described as "the most dangerous man in America" by President Richard Nixon." from Wikipedia

I owe Timothy Leary something,, not sure what yet,,,,:eek::D

Not a picture but very fitting to this thread. As the great Merle Haggard sang about..................................

I wish a buck was still silver
It was back when the country was strong
    Back before Elvis
An before Viet Nam war came along

    Before the Beatles and 'Yesterday'
When a man could still work, still would
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
And are the good times really over for good?

An are we rollin' down hill
Like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the flag
    Or the Liberty Bell

    I wish a Ford an a Chevy
    Would still last ten years
    Like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
And are the good times really over for good?

I wish coke was still cola
And a joint was a bad place to be
An it was back before Nixon
Lied to us all on TV

    Before microwave ovens
When I girl could still cook
    Still would
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
And are the good times really over for good?

    Are we rollin' down hill
Like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the flag
    The Liberty Bell

    I wish a Ford an a Chevy
    Would still last ten years
    Like they should
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
And are the good times really over for good?

    Stop rolling down hill
Like a snowball headed for hell
    Stand up for the flag
And let's all ring The Liberty Bell

Let's make the Ford and a Chevy
    That'll still last ten years
    Like they should
'Cause the best of the free life
    Is still yet to come
An the good times ain't over for good.

This style 7-Up bottle was done from at least '43 through '54
when the girl in the swimsuit was replaced with just bubbles
for '55. I collected pop bottles along the road as a kid for the
2 or 3 pennies you could turn 'em in for at a store and buy
some candy. Man! Made you feel rich -- at least 'til the candy
was gone! I still have a collection of pop bottles too special to
turn in, including a 1938 Royal Crown Cola. I just saw some-
body asking $20 for a post '54 7-Up bottle! Back when I was
getting 2-3 cents, I would have fallen on the ground in dis-
belief!!! Part of me still clings to the OLD 7Up, before the
current owners messed up the formula with slick syrup in-
    stead of real sugar.

Actually, the neighborhood is not bad at all. The old World's Fair site is now Flushing Meadows park. The NYS pavilion shown is not in use except in 'Men in Black'. The Unisphere is there. The NYC pavilion is still there, and is used. The Port Authority pavilion (the old helicopter place) is an upscale restaurant and event center/catering hall. Singer Stadium, where I once attended a concert with the Soft Machine, 'Big Brother and the Holding Company' (aka Janis Joplin) and Jimi Friggin' Hendrix is still there. The Hall of Science is still there, too. So overall not too bad considering: a nice park with some nice attractions in a very decent middle-class neighborhood (albeit, one surrounded by highways).

I think the Decastro sisters above were actually the Decastro brothers. Cross dressers maybe?

  23. I remember him as "Jingles" on the Wild Bill Hickock show. And didn't they appear on a Post Cereal box - maybe Sugar Pops, about '58 or '59?

This photo is just too cool! As are the other vintage camping photos. I have an off-topic '65 Rambler American 330 4 door sedan (okay - body style is from '64, so I pretend it's close) and a '66 Apache popup.

Vintage camping is a lot of fun - but man! It would be a lot cooler with a full size car from the early fifties and a nice sized aluminum camper.

    Just too cool!

    You're bringing back memories jimi,
when i was 8 my brother and i used to walk and later ride our bikes 7 miles down brookhurst from mcfadden to huntington bch and collect pop bottles, big ones were a dime, small ones a nickel, then we could eat at the taco bell by the pier, or just buy candy,
same thing on the way home.. back when there was dirt, now its all concrete and asphault,,
    thanks for the memories
