Piston replacement

Hello all,
Someone asked for help in installing their pistons while rebuilding the motor (1989 4.3 v6). The rods and caps have numbers stamped on them, do these numbers follow the firing order or do they go in sequence? Thanks to all who help.

In sequence from front to back is the accepted norm. So, 1 and 2 would be on the first journal, 3 and 4 the next, etc.

They are for cylinder numbers. Starting from the front to the back. Odd numbers left bank. even numbers right bank. SBC without cylinders 7 and 8.

That doesn't always hold water due to the fact that a great number of engines have the odd numbered cylinders on the right (American car passenger side) bank.

But most are stamped front to back no matter what the configuration of the block.

Make sure you don't mix the rod caps up as they are NOT
interchangeable.The bearing lock notches should be adjacent.
Also most pistons have a front and back. Usually a notch on the
top of the piston edge that goes toward the front.
Some older ones have a "F" marked on the side of the piston
by the wrist pin. Faces the front.
If you already knew this, maybe it will help those who didn't.

 

I understand that but as far as the 4.3L Chevrolet it is odd on the left even on the right. I drive an 03 s10 with that same engine but i understand your clarification

However it was my assumption that it was the 4.3 V6 chevrolet from 1989. but as far as i know there's no other 4.3L v6 from this time period
