I seen that car there. I think maybe for the last three or four years. Have you had it all that while?

I was wondering if they ever came as "stockers". All I have ever seen is gassers.

did yours come with the inject 394 Olds or the blown Hemi?

it is always a treat to see a stocker.

  10. Those rear fenders aren't stock; they've been radiused.

If I am not mistaken they're stock unradiused '37/'38/'39 Model 48 rear fenders - just like the ones on my '39....

In the early sixties, I was on a church field trip to Harpers Ferry WVA. Across the street was a primer gray 40 Willys coupe. I got away long enough to get over there to take a look. It was box stock! I couldn't believe it.

Stone Woods and Cook were in all the magazines. I was sure a hotrodder found it and primered it waiting for an engine transplant. As we were leaving town in the school bus, it pulled up next to us and a little old lady was driving it. No shit. She was older than dirt and probably the original owner. I guess it was just badly faded gray paint.

I guess that makes me older than dirt to be able to say I saw one actually driven on the street as a daily driver.:D

  15. I don't recall the earlier fenders having such sharp corners on the lower edges of, or such a perfectly circular shape to, the openings. I'm probably just slipping after having seen so many "1941" cars.

Either way, still isn't a "stock" car with that later front end. ;)

My dad and his Willys back in the day... he sold this car and got a '34 Ford convertible coupe.

The front end appears to be original to the car - apart from the aftermarket headlights - probably Electrolines, but the rear fenders are the earlier 1937-39 Model 48 type (1939 Overland had 102" WB, the later type rear fenders, 61 HP, hydraulic brakes, 5 lug wheels). 1937 Model 37, 1938 Model 38 and 1939 Model 48 cars had running boards, 100" wheelbase, 48 HP mechanical brakes 4 lug wheels.

Here's a 1939 Overland with the later fenders which were used only on the Overland in 1939 and the 1940 Model 440. The 1941 coupe fenders look similar to the 1940s but are in fact different because the wheel opening was moved just over 1" further back to accommodate the new frame and 104" wheelbase. The 1941 coupoe rear fenders were notched for the bumper irons (necessitated by the 2" wider frame, and the gas filler neck came through a hole in the passenger fender - not in the body as previously. Willys are a subject prone to much misinformation. I hope this clears up a few points.

1939 Overland coupe with the later type rear fender:

Thanks, gotta wonder if the skirts were really FOR a Willys or they came from something else. Knowing my dad it was probably the latter. :D He got rid of the car cuz he said it was a slug with the original 4 cylinder. With a flatty his '34 was better in that regard but mom complained that the heater in it was reason to carry a blanket and "snuggle".

I was at the Radir party and took a good look at your Willy's. Very few Stockers around for sure.

the skirts you dad had were most likely 40 ford from what I can tell.

I see some of the cars have running boards and others don't. Was this an option or just offered certain years?

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. My dad definitely liked off-beat stuff, eclectic marques and wasn't exactly what you would call brand loyal.

As far as I know, running boards were standard on passenger cars 1937 Model 37, 1938 model 38 and 1939 Model 48. Optional on 1939 Overland, 1940 440 models, and 1941 Model 441 - maybe through 1942 Model 442. Standard on pickup trucks 1937-42 and standard on 1940 and 1941 Station wagon (woodie).

Who cares stock wheel wells or not or dumped front end for that matter , the car is a real cool piece. The wheel openings are stock to that car for the record.
    Love your Willys Brother.
