Customs 54 chevy car headlight help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fivefochevy, Dec 3, 2010.

  1. Hey gang, I am looking for away to kustomize the headlights on my 54 belair. i have seen kits and whatnot, but would prefer to use another make/model of headlight ring or bezel that could be frenched. i like the tunneled look but anything a little different from the stock ( if it looks good) bezels will work. nothing against stock, but it's stock. any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, kenny

Thats what i did on mine years ago ,but i took it a step further and grafted about a foot of a 55 Chevy front fender on my 53 fenders on my 54.It was alot of work ,but looked good in the end IMO .I went through a stage where i wanted to change everything so took it out on my 54.It had 53 fenders and grill opening with a narrowed 54 grill ,54 Olds wheel openings up front and 55 Poncho in the rear with the 55 back bumper. It eventually had a 52 Plymouth grill with a 55 Plymouth front bumper after this pic ,but you can see how the 55 front fender ends looked on the 53 fenders ...

thats the way i did it as well but its tough to find 55 fenders for a decent price that you can cut up.

I lucked out when i did this way back when in '04.A freind gave me two fenders from a 55.One had a tree fall on it and crushed it right over the tire. The other had been bashed in behind the tire (and i mean bad). The odd thing is that both of them had nice solid "eyebrows" on them with not even a pin hole. What are the odds :)???

52-54 mercm can work good. my only prob with olds like 56 is that they have peak on top. there is already a peak on the side of the fenders. unless the sides are removed or like pontiact fenders are grafted there will be alot of peaks. 55 don't have peak on top. i wanted to do like 55 Lincoln but couldn't find the bezel.

  10. anybody have any 55 fenders or parts that are affordable? I like that look but it is hard to find decent ones to start with. I have a really nice body so I want to start with good stuff. Any leads willbe greatly appreciated. I am located in louisville, ky. Thanks, Kenny

Personally I think stock '54 rings look really good frenched, but it is hard to go wrong with the ever-popular '52-54 Mercury rings and bezels. (These are repops on my '53 Chevy.)

They probably won't even come in the house. From the UPS truck to the car.

A body shop in Oklahoma used a french headlight kit sold by KOOL Rides and took photes during the process and was pleased with the final product. The body shop is willing to share the photes to see if this look appeals to you. Call the shop at 620-442-8500 and we can get you hooked up.

Ok, the rings came in. They don't fit properly without having to do a little work. So what I have done for now is, I took a set of old stock rings, cleaned them up and painted them except for the inside of them. Put them on the car and it gives it frenched look. I've seen a tech thread here the gives step by step details on frenching with stock rings.
