Ms. J might need to strap a piece of leather on his butt, and lower onto the pavement! Anyone who appreciates what the HAMB has made possible, has received a gift. Ryan and the others who contribute sure do brighten my day. Rumi wrote that critics are like flies...needing no real acknowledgment. A moment passes and they are gone. Beaner, Paul, Curious, Jive-Bomber, and the rest gave us a chance to learn, connect and even watch a car come together for HambAndy. Thanks, Ryan.
I don't even get what Janet is talking about. What is with the arrogance? This is a hobby about cars and some people act like it's sacred. I do have a huge respect for the early guys but what is different between that and what I do? I am just a guy trying to build something I think it cool. It' just cars. It doesn't mean I need to pray at the altar of some kid from 1949 and pay my dues to him before I can do what I want or build what I want. It seems the old guys the cool guys who are part of the great club of hot rodding want to tell us all how it's done and worship them and anyone not in the club aren't cool. I would love to build my self a 29 A roadster in a forties style. But these same old dudes want to sell me a body for 5k and I can't afford that so I guess I am just a poser and will still be coming here to the hamb and learning and giving respect to the people who are building these cars until I can build me own. If only these old dudes could look inside me and see the passion and the desire to give respect to the way it was done. But again these are the guys hoarding the materials.
I believe Ryan and his Jalopy Journal/HAMB along with the Rodder's Journal are the best thing to happen to hot rodding in the history of the world! For real. F-Janet and her attitude. She has no clue. That video says it all. The history and tradition is what it's all about. The music in it alone speaks volumes. It's a little rage followed by some chill and a little Bobby McFerrin in between. So awesome! If that doesn't get you fired up...nothing will. And how about that yellow '59 El Camino push car in the video. Holy shit balls that's cool! Ryan is my hero! pass it on......
OK, I thought I was done but I have a couple more comments. When is the last time a magazine editor rushed out to help a reader broken down on the side of the road? Or sent a part to a total stranger just because you knew they needed it to get their project on the road? Or tracked down car thieves? Through the HAMB it happens all the time. Janet just doesn't understand that the HAMB is a community. I get the feeling that Janet is an elitist and doesn't really doesn't want to rub elbows with us, the greasy unwashed masses. If Janet wants to survive, he needs to serve the community, be in touch with it, and be a part of it, not shake his fist and curse at us. There may be opportunity here, Janet and all you want to do is sit there pissing and moaning and alienating the very people that you purport to serve? OK, I think I'm done now. Isn't this a great thread?
Its easier to kill the messager, than deal with bad news. I've subscribed to several mags for decades. I held my nose through vans, pro street, pro touring, tuners, ugly graffics, go karts, dirt bikes, and even slotcars. I waited for the wheel to come back to the cars that got me interested in Hotrods in the first place. With the exception of some recient features it hasn't happened yet. I only subscribe to one now and it had better not degenerate to what the others have or I'm done. After reading, subscribing, and collecting Rod mags for 50 years I had an eppifany [spelling?] I really CAN get along without a magazine in my hand! My crack habit is broken.
All I can gather out of that email...is that the guy doesn't like you Ryan! lol Probably because you've told him that he doesn't know what he's talking about...once or twice before. Let me know if I'm correct.... So now you're doing your own thing with the Jalopy Journal...it's a huge success....tonnes of memberships.....and some of the members shit on the magazines that this guy is associated with.....LOL....I love it. Being the spiteful guy I am, I love seeing a young buck upset the old guard....specially when that old guard never really gave the young buck the credit he deserved. It ususally stems from the old guard feeling threatened by the young buck with more talent/passion/knowledge/skill/ability/adversity....etc. His jealousy fits him like an ugly Christmas sweater! haha. Let him wear it in shame! JANET! LOL i love it! hahahaha
Ryan, what you are doing WORKS FOR ME , and it damned sure seems clear (to me) that it does for the many others' as well. As longs at it feels like it's working for YOU, Janet's opinion doesn't really count for much. Thanks, firstnomad www.angelfire.com/jazz/flatlandstudio
The tone of Janets email is that of a man perched on the bow of a sinking ship. His statement regarding you "destroying the fabric of hot rodding" is absurd. Much like tv news used to be controlled by 3 or 4 channels, he seems pissed (as are the mainstream news stations) that they no longer control the flow of information. If the HAMB is guilty of anything it is that you have brought traditional hot rods and customs ( And Gassers, and vintage drag cars!) out of the woodwork and almost forced magazines to acknowledge them. In addition, due to the HAMB there is also no valid excuse for a half assed 50's style backyard build anymore as there are literally experts in every facet of automotive construction on the HAMB and most are happy to provide information to help other members with their builds. Janet has apparently discovered that print media will never again be in the leadership position they once were, and that must be a bitter pill to swallow. I've watched as magazines like Popular Hot Rodding have gone from fantastic in the middle 1970's to something I wouldn't pickup today if they were free. Not unlike the angry horse salesman in 1905 who threw stones at those "damn automobiles", Janet needs to get onboard or be left at the station. Thank you Ryan for providing the best damn car site on the net!
i dont think mags are going anywhere, mags and the internet both have there place i like both, but the mags need to step up the quality content and physical wise. i'm willing to pay more money for higher quality and less ads but i'm not willing to pay the same price for constant decline in paper and print quality and 60% ads
"Janet" gives you far too much credit, Ryan.. The trends and attitudes of the rodding community change and return on a cyclical basis....nothing here is new. The current change from pro-street, chromeless, billet to more traditional hotrods would have happened with your site or without it. Same goes for the Gasser style cars. I don't even want to entertain the rat-rod movement here. Take a look in Ryan's garage.....not any cars even close to a rat-rod there and the very term "rat rod" is banned on this site. I kind of think "Janet" is refering to that movement when he accuses Ryan of ruining hotrodding... Truth is, ratrodding has gained a toe hold in the written media press..more so than it has here on the HAMB. I believe "Janet" is very confused.
Oh yeah... and Janet blaming Ryan is like the stablemaster blaming Henry Ford for the demise of the horse industry... Travis
Wow, someone got their feelins hurt. In the words of the great R. Lee Ermey, "Maybe we should chug on over to Namby Pamby land, where MAYBE we can find some self confidence for you, ya JACKWAGON!" Yes, the print world created everything we care about *cough*BULLSHIT*cough*. The print world RESPONDED to what was already going on. But hey, according to Crybaby here, they did. And as such we should all bow down to them. So everyone, sell what you have, go buy a 49-54 Chevy, and remove the front clips, bolt/weld on Mustang II-based front suspensions so that we can install a new GM crate engine and wiring harness, courtesy of "who paid the most this month to hawk the same crap hawked for the past 8 years." Print world is STAGNANT. A man grows weary of the same recycled tech drivel over and over.
Great video........and to "Janet".......Oh well, I get magazines from my pop's that were passed thru his non-internet car buddies. Heck, I remember reading thru "Rod & Custom" back in early 2000's and someone had a "shot" of a car in front of a hamburger place and cut off the last part of the "Burger" part in the shot and everyone (300 members) got excited that the "HAMB" was in "Rod & Custom".....haha.......I do wonder if "Janet" will step up to the plate and post something.......the HAMB has quite a few "magazine guys" on here and they defend and listen to posts on the "instant" web. Chris Nelson Kansas Oh yea, I bet that VIMEO was pretty happy with the "hits" on their site today....haha.......and I re-posted this on my Facebook acct. and people were saying that it was "Spot on!".......even non-car people. Also, all that I could think of when you called the person "Janet" today was this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDre36ZW14I
Industry pride is much easier to muster while still seated at the industry table. Too bad that table gets smaller everyday.
ryan; would janet be in the magazine business? i would assume so. one thing he should know is that change is inevitable, and if you can't keep up you'll be left behind. i personally still have a subscription to one mag. the problem is every issue is a disappointment. it doesn't go into enough depth to satisfy my lack of knowldege. the hamb does go into depth and allows me to electronically interact with some of the most knowledgable and helpful people in this game. to me the hamb is the big dog and janet should stay on the porch. rer_239
If "Janet" and the rest of the mainstream automotive print media had their shit together, they would have nothing to fear from any internet board. Instead, they cater to their advertisers, and the readership is just a necessary evil. Their bankruptcy a couple years ago, should have been a wake up call. Instead, it is business as usual.
Am I the only one who finds it extremely ironic that the person bitching about how the internet is killing off the printed media used an e-mail to convey his frustrations to Ryan? How does he think the postman feels?
Oh, Is this the month after they ran ALL of the MAG covers with the exact same story as 1988 and the cover with the slash through the cars asking if "they" could out law something. Is it a coincidence that they are moaning or did that high tech high quality bit of copy not sell out except at the petshops as bird cage liner?
There's how many members on this site, and new ones every day. I think most are happy with things here, you're never going to please everybody all the time. Keep up the good work.
Yeah, way to go clown. How dare you let us talk hot rodding and rag on mouse penis cars. For shame..... Thanks for what you do Ryan and I wish I knew who the writer was so I make sure I don't purchase that one any more/ever.
I was born in 1951 and back when growing up the Hot Rod books were pretty good but today 75% ads and maybe 3 cars, gold chain cars, not much tech talk and even ads for Bully-dog for diesel trucks, just about the dollar now with their books and Janet and her friends need to look in the mirror and whine because looking in there they will find somebody to listen to their bullshit, bout the only thing these magazines have built is a bank account and if wasn"t dwindling Janet wouldn"t be sending out e-mails.So real smart move Janet making alot more people not wanting to buy your product.Ryan, thanks for sharing.
Janet and company need to go back and read the car magazines from the 50's and 60's. Way before Adrian Lopez started Streetrodder magazine, way before big advertisers called the shots, way before "tech" articles were just infomercials.
After reading that, its hard to stop laughing! Thank you, Saxman! I have never bought 99.9 per cent of the stuff the magazines advertise and never will. I liked Streetrodders how-to-do-it articles but one day I added up the number of pages of advertising versus the pages of good usable information and realized that magazines have a lot of gall to charge the advertisers AND ME to print their ads. Its been years since I subscribed to any of them.
The pisser for them there is that they may have to find these articles on the net. They may be on this site. That made me laugh and blow soda out my nose.
In A Nut Shell . if the Janets of the Car World would only admit that the contemporary auto related activities, NASCAR, Drag Racing, Car Shows, Magazines, etc. and et all are all driven by the almighty BUCK and that they are losing their fan base as a result of it, they might get it. But I highly doubt it. They cannot begin to compete with a tight group of fanatics who have a very specific vision of what they like to watch, read and more importantly, PARTICIPATE in. The Car World has consistently pushed the average person farther and farther to the side and only concentrated on those things they can do and use to generate money. Well the HAMB doesnt generate money it generates passion, passion for a tradition that transcends monetary gains or fads. It is built on a foundation of respect and admiration for those who came before us and what they thought the passion could be. We admire their contributions and commitment to establishing a very loose but recognizable aesthetic. It is not driven by fad or monetary gain but by respect and historically driven information. We on the HAMB subscribe to that tradition, some in a fanatical ways, others with more tolerance of the new but all with a fairly good idea of what it means. I long ago lost interest in BIG racing, BIG car showing and BIG magazineing. It holds no interest for me. The HAMB holds interest for me as well as a few publications that reflect a similar aesthetic. I dont and wont buy anything that does not reflect MY tastes. Its amazing that Janet feels so threatened by a relatively small group of car fanatics who subscribe to a certain belief structure that is not mainstream, but old stream. We dont want to see or read about whats popular or hot at the moment because we know what is traditionally done and respected, it doesnt change month to month, which spells death to monthly magazines. So be it then, we are a group of participators not observers and if the Janets (and Brads) of the world dont get it, they will go the way of the Dodo Bird and all other things no longer relevant. As Einstein said, When all think alike no one thinks very much! Oh and Ryan, thank you for giving us this forum which generates a lot of good and bad stuff. But such is life, if you dont like something and it doesnt threaten to physically hurt you, ignore it and move on, theres always something better coming up on the next thread.
I'm a relative newcomer to this site and not nearly as prolific when it comes to posting as some but I would like to think I have somewhat of a gist of what goes on here. Personally I don't see the bashing or hoodlum activity being described. For the most part I see a well moderated (mostly self moderated) voicing of opinions and ideals. Something we have a constitutional right to do. (in most countries) There are no serious knock down mud slinging slander fests and if they head I that direction they get cut off fairly quickly. Mostly by the general population of the board. This board is home to some of the greatest threads I have seen on any forum. (Drag Cars in Motion: being front and center). The entertainment and educational value of the board is outstanding. Some folks have even showed interest in my own build which has given me a huge sence of ownership and responsibility to contribute back and support others and their builds. Hot Rodding is a huge and diverse past time. This forum caters to only a few aspecs or Hot Rodding and a style of Hot Rodding. It rarely if ever slanders any of the other forms, rather, it guides with intent any line of discussion that is found to be drifting off topic, back to the format and purpose of the forum. I am also a member of the Yellow Bullet forum and if there is any board that represents everything this board should not be it's that one. They have a fabulous technical section and for the most part support the VERY fast car technology genre extremely well. But be warned, the general forum is open warfare mixed with hard core pornography. Entertaining as hell but definitely not for the weak of heart or for men prone to vapours. Certainly not a forum you can read with you kid in your lap. If "Janet" wants to promote the other forms of our sport then He / She can slide over to the Rat Rod or Billet Rod forums or the Kit Car forums or the Low Rider forums or (God help us) the DONK forums and be an active member of any of those communities. In the meantime the H.A.M.B. should be like a duck and shrug this crop off thier back. It should carry on doing what it's doing and be all the better for it.
As said several times before everyone has an opinion, I do get the mags but they cant answer my questions or give me multiple opinions/views of the same story. My dad is nearly 70 and not into the internet, but he does say lets check out whats going on on that website (HAMB) when I visit him. Keep up the good work.
Ahhh yes.... Finally an insight into the mind of a pinhead seeing the world thru a pinhole camera. If there was ANYTHING of reasonable value in their RAGS this conversation would not be happening. Screw 'em, Ryan. Take the compliment and move on. Oh...one more point.... Freedom of speech has destroyed LOTS of things. Most weren't so good.
