Small chambers, big valves, big ports.

Original equipment on the 327 go fast engines.

Oh...and the distinctive casting ID mark on the end, with two humps on top of a rectangle

they come in 1:94 and 2:02 sizes. now with all the new aftermarket heads that are out they are not in that much demand anymore and you can get them pretty cheap. still good for old school stuff like 292 or 301 period correct gasser motors.

  4. These are 461's. Small chambers.

I know a guy who milled camel humps into his aluminum heads so he could run his Corvette in a different class for autocross.

it's only cheating if you get caught.

....and, years ago, I knew a guy who ground the twin humps OFF of his heads in order to pass them off as 283 2 bbl heads for stock class drag racing.

They were the thing to have back in the day. Now they are outdated and there's plenty of better alternatives, unless you have other reasons to use them besides performance. Most of them are at the age where guides, seats, valves and most everything needs replacing. By the time that is all paid for, you end up being real close to an aftermarket head that will flow much better and make more power.

  14. Do all 62-68 327(no acc. holes) heads have camel humps? I've been wondering that for a while now!

I think there's a low compression 1968 car 327 that does not, and the truck motors don't

The 327/275 motor in my old '68 Camaro didn't have the humps..

  17. Thanks guys.. I have a 64 327/250 with newer heads on it. So now I'm definitely going to grind off the 'new' - to keep with the old!

1962-65 250 hp 327s had small four barrel carbs (either 4GC or WCFB) and the same heads as the power pack 283s. In that era, the double humps were reserved for the 300 hp and higher 327s.

  21. I appreciate the info, thanks!

In Sweden they´re called Mickey Mouse heads. The humps look like Mickey Mouse´s ears. This is a pretty useless post but nevertheless....

No. Powerpack heads were also an option. They can be ID'd by the 'church steeple' casting.

Many years ago we had a set of 461 X heads. They came with 2.02s and pretty good sized ports compared to the 461s we had as well. We more or less copied the X port dimensions on the std heads. Put em on a 331 that would sing but the rest of the car was shit. I'd be pretty fond of a pair of them ol heads. Always good power. Newer ain't always kooler, right?

This might be what I have. The guy I got the engine from called them "spike" heads. I don't remember what the numbers are.

  28. Do any of the aftermarket head manufacturers produce a Chevy head without accessory holes or the flat machined pads on the ends? In other words, power pack or camel hump look-a-likes. You would think that there would be a market for good nostalgia motor heads.

That's something I'd love to see. With CNC, you'd think it would be a snap.
