What a HAMB guy should see in New York City

I'm headed to NYC tonight for the first time ever (outside of the airport). I'm spending the weekend with my brother and cant wait to see the city. I'm wondering if there are any Car, Motorcycle or Transportation museums in the city that I should see. The Rumblers Car Club - Club House?

Let me know what not to miss. Thanks-

 

If it were my first trip to NYC, the last thing I'd be looking to see is old cars!

Go to Patsy's Italian Restaurant in Greenwich Village for some real good food! Frank Sinatra used to eat there!

I gotta agree. I'm as died in the wool a car guy as you can get, but when I'm in New York I don't even think about cars. Go see a show,eat at Carmines,visit Ground Zero or the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State building. Go to Times Square and just walk around. New York has a pulse all it's own, just go out and enjoy the city.

Bring a lot of cash, no checks or credit cards.

Dude, you have to hit McSorleys, and anyone who ever goes to Manhattan must hit McSorleys.. Abraham Lincoln drank here. The place is as old school as you are ever going to find in this country. There are chicken wishbones hanging from the chandeliers that have been there since the Civil War. The story goes, soldiers before they left to war would hang the wishbones from he chandeliers, and the could only be removed by the soldier when he returned. There are still many wishbones up there,and trust you me, it looks like they havent been moved in over 150 years.. Women were only allowd to enter the bar in 1970. hahaha.. This place is awesome.. Oh and by the way there are only 2 beers light and dark, and they come in small mugs and sold by the pair.. You can not leave New York without visiting McSorleys..

yep go to Patsy's, the only way anyone can get me into the city is to promise Patsy's. really the city not my cup of tea, but like its been said cars will be the last thing on the list to see. i think the best part is just walking a round, looking around, i mean the place would be great if there werent so many people. Also buy something fake like a 24 hour watch, bootleg dvd..... i promise you will have a good laugh about it. Best of luck on your trip

Have a hell of a good time. After you visit the World Trade Center site since you are already downtown, enjoy the harbor view of the Statue of Liberty. Spectacular. Slim

 

Just walk. On my second trip to NYC I walked for hours at night while the wife and kid slept in the hotel room. It was great.

If your Lonely and want some female companionship Hunt's Point. You might want to be de-loused after the encounter though ( ha-ha )

You guys want to send him to the Ear and Old Town?!?! NICE! Great bars! Keep in mind some of the places mentioned like Peter Lugars and Chip Shop are in Brooklyn. (there might be two Chip Shops tho.) Regarding Carmines, it's an experience that tourist love ...and it's fun, but there is much better Italian to be had here. Bar Pitti (sp?) comes to mind.

Couple of pointers
- tourists look up
- New Yorkers look down
- don't stop at the top of the subway enterance (you'll get run over)
- tell the cab driver where you're going AFTER you get in
- we have buy-backs - most bartenders will treat you to your 3 or 4th
- subways 24/7
- New Yorkers aren't rude, they're justin a hurry - got a question, stop one and ask them!!!

 

staten island ferry . not sure if it is still .25 cents but you can buy 2 beers in manhatten and make the round trip

 

Head to south street sea port check out the museums then get a ride on THE BEAST .If THE BEAST is still around , its a speed boat ride around the island and a total blast .

 

If you like pastrami sandwiches, go to Katz' Deli 205 E Houston St (at Ludlow).

If you want the best bagel on the planet, go to Ess-A Bagel, 831 3rd Ave (between 50th St & 51st St).

If you want great bison burgers, go to Ted's Montana Grille. 110 West 51st Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues).

Go see a show on Broadway, Time Square at night, MOMA, or just wander around mid-town.

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting something cool and unusual in NYC!

So true, Antny. I can't get a proper Pastrami sandwhich out here.

 

The Belnord Hotel has some of the best rates around for just two people. It is upper West side within a couple of blocks from Central Park. It is 209 West 87th St. It has private bathroom. If you don't need a huge room it is great. Priced really reasonable. You should go see Jaques Torres Chocolate Factory. He used to have a program on Food Network called Desert Circus. He is a dean of the New York Culinary Institute. He judges desert and pastry competitions. Awesome little Chocolate factory. If you go to the Belnord there is a street called Amsterdam and it has one of the Chocolate shoppes on it. There is some of the greatest food in the world in New York.
Times square in the late 60's early 70's was a dive. Now it is a truly interesting and amazing place to go and you can sit and have coffee etc. outside. The decorations and lights are phenomenal now. We did not get to any car shows but will go sometime for some biggies that are held there and close by. We even went from pub to pub or restaurant and priced out our beer and found a great Irish place in Times square that sold Guinness for cheaper than we get it here. French pastry shoppes. Italian breads and pizza...etc...every culture of the world is there. Wonderful place to go. Central park is amazing and great...Soho district etc amazing...You gotta love New York as a tourist. Just our two cents. BTW, we bought subway passes for the week and found we could get anywhere we wanted...

 

You can see were all the rest of the states money goes!

 

Definitely check out Chinatown, and if the lady friend is going with you, be prepared to be mobbed out of the subway with people selling purses..lol When my wife and I went in '08, we bought several very high quality coach knock-offs and my Faulex, and only paid $100 for all of it! (5 purses and the watch) The downside, we did buy them out of a van...lol

Get a subway pass and enjoy the ride, it saved us a ton of time and trouble, just be careful to not get on the express trains..lol

And, I think its at 46th and Broadway, but the diner from Seinfeld is on a corner, found it totally by accident the day we got there! So much to see and do, I didn't think about driving (except when I saw my "purple" brothers in Manhattan) the whole time we were there.

Uhm, I'm gonna hafta go with H&H. Upper East Side is my favorite one.

 

Go see the gals at the Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery....They sell cup cakes and banana pudding to die for...LOL...It is just a little bitty place and the crowd loves the place. Righto about the EXPRESS trains and be sure which direction you are going ...UP town or DOWN town...We ended up getting turned around a few times... There is a Starbucks on every corner now. There is even one in the basement of the Empire State Building... Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery is close to China Town if I remember correctly.
