Being prepared is a must, civilized.......not so much. Look at the news..........its the wacko protesters who always seem to get what they want, not the quiet ones. Look at the vocal minority/PC crowd, they have everyone scared to call a spade a spade out of fear they will be branded a racist/homophobic/bigot/ect. When the time comes I vote we raise hell.

Take a legislator to a car show.

My cars have as much chance of being taken away from me as my guns do.

It's easier to get involved and help craft the rules than it is to try and reverse the direction of others.

In January of 2010 I sent Emails to my Ca. Assembly Man, Ca. State Senator, Hagerty, my insurance carrier and SEMA.This was in regards to Ca. DMV 343. Hagerty contacted their lawyer to answer my question. My State Senator or one of his people also answered. The State assembly man and SEMA did not reply.
If you read your History, Los Angels had a inner city Public Transportation second to none. General Motors was a MAJOR player in eliminating the Public Transport. Look at Ca. DMV 343 and General Motors is also the Major Player. SEMA has a $3000.00 retrofit smog system for Hot Rods, plus installation. If that does not work GM will sell you a $10,000.00 crate engine. The 343, in my opinion, is the end of hot rods as we know them! A new lobbyists group is needed so we do not loose any more of our rights.

  7. Many cities had a vast network of transportation. GM IS NOT our friend, even though we all own a part of it now.

Nope, though a boost in sales would be nice, we as a collective just made a public statement regarding the current nationwide legislative status. SEMA fed us the "goods" and the "bads", all of which we documented so the readers know what the hell's going on. That's all. My vote to use the bozo illustration behind the anti circle was veto'd, unfortunately.

I don't get the point of the "new" bill in Ct....we already have tax protection if you use the collector plates. Your town can only put a $500 max yearly property tax value even if it's a Deusenberg.

This new bill must cover some rich people cars that don't qualify for antique plates ??

Several things have changed here in Illinois But the new rules are based more on getting more tax dollars. It still makes things harder.

I agree. I live where rusted_nut lives; he is a friend of mine. This used to be a great place to live, but with our socialist-utopia mayor and his supporters, it's now a politically-correct, save-the-planet, all-old-cars-are-evil, kind of place: more and more government control over what we are allowed to do on our own property. We've even had a couple of old ladies who drive around town with a newspaper reporter, publishing in the paper the location of any old cars they spot. The same two old ladies, btw, are trying to save every rotting, falling-down building in old Conway, but they see every old car as an eyesore.

Our county JPs have done the same thing for people living in the country. No more project cars (the ordinance refers to them as junk) unless one has over 10 acres. One wealthy farmer I know with a couple thousand acres of farmland has 20-30 old rusting tractors, trucks, and cars all over his property but that's ok 'cause he has money. Too bad for Joe Schmuck who has 3 acres and a couple of cars he's in the process of building.

We can bury our heads in the sand, but when it's happening even in a little town in the middle of Arkansas, it's time to get involved in the political process. Rusted_nut's cars went to the crusher; the city gave him only 7 days to get them off his property. His cars, and the money he had invested in them, is gone. When they come for your cars, don't say you weren't warned.

Let's get the ball rolling on Nov. 2. The people in charge are the problem. Remove them and replace them with sympathetic candidates and we will be headed in the right direction. Then in 2012 do another house cleaning. The next few elections will determine how long we retain the few freedoms we have left. Sit on your hands and you deserve whatever you get.

I'm still up for a pitch forks and torches rally! Sounds allot like most of you guys don't happen to live in the more liberal parts of your towns Where you don't have to put up with constant gay marriage marches, marches to support illegal aliens rights (HUH?!), and where worn out earth mamas wait in the parking lot at the grocery store to give you fake "gross polluter" tickets and yell at you as long as they can. More power to you if your okay with the current situation, but I'm just about at the end of my rope. Makes no difference to try to reason with these dorks, so I intend to deal with things on my own level. Some one earlier paraphrased "Pry it from my cold dead hands" quote, some else added, "provided they win". I intend to not let them...

Each State, County and City needs to have a group of car guys and gals watch to see what comes down the pike that hurts car lovers.

The watchers then need to list those who voted for or are about to vote for those things.

Then when ever there is a car show or other car event they and all of the car clubs in the area, City, County or State need to hand out flyers with lists of the names and office phone numbers of those who are responsible for the laws, regulations or codes being used against our liberties along with an explination of how they affect us.

At the same time a copy needs to be delivered with an explination of how many were handed out, where, and to whom they were given.

When the politician sees how many people are aware of their mischief and they start receiving phone calls about it they will decide to change their policies and think first before starting any thing else.

Many of these people are elected by slim margins and if they think that they might lose a few hundred, thousand or hundred thousand votes in their next election.

They will also have to live with the pressure of people knowing that they are hurting not only the car hobby but many businesses and thousands of jobs.

I have tried not to get specifically political in this post because the moderator doesn't like it.

However we have to do something soon or there won't be any Traditional Hot Rods or any other kind for that matter.

If this happens there won't be any HAMB.

  20. I think the only angle we will eventually be able to work is the "preserving our American herritage" angle...

Which, is what we will be doing.

Sam you have hit the nail on the head. It's the only method that worked in some of Europes most environmentally conscientious countries. Traditionalist hot rodders need to distance themselves from the "Hot Rod Magazine" faction, who will lose this battle, and align themselves with the restorers who are, as you say preserving American heritage. The American heritage card is the only one which will work. Thousands of jobs doesn't interest the politicians.
Oh and get Jay Leno in on it.

  22. Ryan with the utmost respect, that time is here, now! Do you really know for sure that there is not some existing or proposed legislature, local, State or National that will effect what we love to do?
The situation can change and it can change very quickly.
This year we have had an example here in Australia where a piece of National legislation which had laid dormant for years was enforced overnight by a bureaucrat without any consultation or warning. This related to the importation of modified vehicles to Australia and there were many guys who had their cars tied up on the docks either in the States or here in Australia and they could not get them released.
Now at the end of the day the reasons for the existence of this legislation did not matter or how it came about (even though it left every one dumbfounded), it was there, and this person decided to use it. There was no discussion as to if it was a good thing or not it was already LAW.
This is just one example and there are others.

Weather you like it or not at least in the States you have a number of industry bodies of reasonable substance who can represent you. They can talk to these politians and bureaucrats in their own language and convince or persuade them that some of the things they think or have been told, are not such good ideas after all. No one organization acting in isolation will ever be able to do the job, You need to support all of these organizations.

Together we stand, divided we fall.

Please take these comments in the manner which they were intended. I could have just as easily chosen not to write anything here, but I really think you need to re-think this very important issue.

Stupidity spreads like a virus, and cant be reasoned with.

Once they have it in their heads, that they are right, and we just dont know whats good for ourselfs what we all know and love of our hobby, lifestyle , way of making a living..family time...will be no more.

because they are assholes and are clueless...its an adgenda.they strive to enslave us all...And its working.

    ----------------
Actually, the purpose of the 'retro-fit
kits' that were forced on owners of older
cars at the time, (along with EGR, lower
    compression ratios, retarded ignition
timing and other mods adopted by the
manufacturers of new cars) was to lower
the temperature of combustion - not raise
it - which decreases, not increases, the
production of nitrogen oxides. But lowering
    the combustion temperature also decreases
the thermal efficiency of an engine, causing
an increase in the amount of unburned
hydrocarbons that are emitted and lowering
both fuel mileage and power output. Despite
    increasing unburned hydrocarbon emissions
and causing more - not less - fuel to be
burned overall, the politicians in their
    all-knowing brilliance and wonderfulness
targeted nitrogen oxides as the number
one 'smog enemy', even though nitrogen
oxide actually occurs naturally in the
atmosphere and is primarilly caused by
ultraviolet radiation from the sun reacting
with nitrogen (at 78% , nitrogen is the
main component of air) and oxygen (which
    makes about 20.9% of air).

Kinda reminiscent of the attitude in Germany in the early 1930s....the problem with apathy is that nobody cares.

What are you going to do when it drops on you and it's too little too late and the hobby is just about legislated out of existence? Hindsight can be a painful thing. Kirk! has it right - you should take heed.

The Ostrich syndrome is alive and well....

Each of us impacts all around us. It seems that the U.S. media mouthpieces resemble the "story" of the radio DJ's who promoted machete-wielding Rwandans. Be careful to filter out the wronged-victim mindset, it's tool used by charismatic megalomaniacs w/a microphone on. Our's is a spirited and talented group. We benefit most, in serving and when necessary, asking for the right kind of support, so the passion can be passed on down to each generation.

Absolutly correct..Pass on your love, pass on your knowledge, pass on your learning, and teachings..and passion for this, you your self can actively affect the future of the mindset of many people if you use the interest of another to pass your love for this type of art, it will continue on..but you also will have to watch those that push to remove it from our culture, and let them know...Not on your watch

Well that's a classic response:rolleyes:. Not sticking my head in the sand, treating it as a real and imminent threat, not ignoring the warning signs and not poo-pooing it as a storm in a teacup or a load of banging the drum - that's what I am doing.

Apart from that, voting for one, joined SEMASAN, joining groups keeping us informed about the latest proposed loony legislation and promoting the further existence of the hobby. Voicing/e-mailing/faxing my disapproval to elected representatives. Thinking of ways to prepare my hot rods for future legislation and how to modify them to comply (even if I hate the thought of doing so) so that I can continue to drive them for as long as possible . Not just sitting on my ass thinking it will never happen - all that pesky stuff....
