I saw it used in the new Street Machine Hot Rod Annual under the Tech Specs for several feature cars leading me to believe it's common usage. Z
When I was living in N.S.W. in the late '60's, they were always referred to as engines or motors..... I must be gittin' old....
Men are Blokes, Women are Sheilas, Freinds are Mates, Cell phones are your Mobile. I sometimes call a engine a Donk and i allways call XXXX beer Shit!
I am from australia and only heard donk as a term for mens penises...i dont know where the hell you guys hang out but i would never call my engine a donk..remember the croc dundee movies.dundees friend in australia was called donk...for a reason.
This link is a pretty funny concise slang dictionary, I was going to say we would only use 20% these days, but re-reading it would definitely be more than that..and Donk gets a mention http://www.amazingaustralia.com.au/language.htm *beat me to it gnichols! And for my American friends who have never been to Oz yet, just so you know; The fastest sport in Australia are the koala-bear-races Kangaroos are used as shopping bags All men are named Bruce Every Australian person has its own sheep farm Instead of formal elections a didgeridoo-contest is held – the winner will be the prime-minister We have only one category of driving license that includes small planes and road trains Our army is equipped only with boomerangs The land is completely flat except Ayers rock Australia is still a colony of convicts Australia is a separate continent because we have no real friends
Donkey is a term or name for anything that could perform similar work that the actual donkey or mule could. ie motors injectors on boilers etc. Very famous as the donkey did such great service in world war 1 transporting ammo and the wounded
Well if you read it in Street Machine it must be in common usage. That mag definately appeals to the lowest common denominator in its readership.
zep058 , Best have your wits about you if you come to Oklahoma . You might get held up on the train from the east or scalped by hostile natives when you leave the train station on your way to town. Look out for tornado's also they just drop out of the sky and suck up whole towns. OK i got off track back to the regular programing
Really? I wasn't blown away by the mag but it was the only one on the newsstand with anything that looked like a hot rod that I hadn't already read. There was some nice work and some questionable stuff too. Z
I asked my grandfather this when I was a kid? A Donk' is short for Donkey [ A donkey does all the work ] A typical kiwi conversation What sort of donk is that ? [ what type of engine? ] It's a barge block mate [ its a Y-block ] Can you "kick it in the guts" for me [ Can you start it ? ] Nah! it just chucked a leg out of bed [ It threw a conrod out the side ] Oh OK! lets go get on the piss then [ lets go to the pub for a beer ] see it's easy to understand
