I have a buddy that used to run this car pictured below. This picture was taken in July of 1967. This car ran an injected 327 and was owned by a guy named David Byrd of Oklahoma City. He bought the truck from Jack Martin also of Oklahoma City. The motor was purchased from Frank and Charlie smith. My buddy is wanting to build a clone/tribute car for his dad. Any info that you have will be much appreciated. We really need more pics of it. I know the power of the hamb, so I am hoping someone recognizes it. Thanks In Advance. Root
Didn't someone pick up a little pickup like this awhile back here on the HAMB? I'd search but can't remember what to search under. Lippy
Lippy you mean this one http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=427766&showall=1 Sure does look close....JOHN
Thanks Porkshop! That could be the one I was thinking about. Seems there was another, more orange looking or something. Oh, well my mind isn't what it use to be. The front crossmember is different, engine ect... Thanks Porkshop, Lippy
...And the bed, and the visor holes' diameter, and the body; the original is a '32-'34, and the 'altered' is a Model A. I have every confidence it will be found...this network is second to none!
That's ok I thought the same thing when I found out Dallas Charlie(now Tulsa)was an old drag racer. He use to be part of the Whiz Kids that ran T/F. OKC Charlie ran a T in A/A and his twin brother Frank ran an A/C dragster. They were both injected SBC powered. Wish my scanner worked as there was an article in HRM September '65 on the Smiths. Sorry for taking this off on a tangent Roothawg.
will it ever get started? I hope so, they have been talkin about it for several yrs now... dad is gettin old, and they need to get with it if it is for papa byrd... just sayin....... I hope they do ,
Chris I grew up with Charlie and Frankie Smith. Charlie ran a A/A roadster called plain vanilla. He was points champion in the late 60s. Frankie ran a chopped model A coupe and then a willie coupe. Then dragsters. Charlie died on the operating table will they were trying to fix a heart problem or something. A few years back. Asfar as I know Frankie is still kicking. The smiths grew up in mulligan flats. They were pardners in concrete construction.
Yeah, Dad always talked about their roadster. I have some 8mm footage of it. I would love to meet him someday. Dad keeps talking about going over there ,but life gets in the way. Sam, I dunno if they ever will. Bruce (mowtomuch) donated a cab to get it rolling but now Chuck is building a house for his youngest daughter and soon to be son in law. I just figured I would help do some legwork in the meantime.
I have been waitin for yrs to see it get a start, I dig it ....it would be kool to see it get done and papa byrd would certainly drive the crap out of it...you need to come out to the race oct 31st too chris.............drive sumthing
BTTT ...... helping my brother Chris find the information needed. There must be HAMB family with information.
Get those pictures and your Model A down to San Antonio this weekend. All the Texas legends of drag racing will be there. I'd be more than willing to bet that someone there would have the info you want. www.texastiming.com
