This is my friend Rockys Plymouth Fury. It was in the shop for a little tune up before his trip to Billetproof CA. I couldn't help but take a few photos. If anyone is going to be at the show come say hi at the "Wrecked Metals" venders booth. Free button, or patch to H.A.M.B Members

    Oddly beautiful, like Drew Barrymore.

  6. I'm a MoPar guy so I like them all, but for most 61, is an "acquired" taste.

  7. I prefer 59.

My brother still cringes over the sunburn he got in the back seat of my aunt's '61 back when it was new. He said it was like having an ant under a magnifying glass! They didn't tint windows back then! Worse sunburn he's ever had. He's 64 now...

I can still remember, as a teenager, seeing for the first time the anxiously anticipated brand new 1961 Plymouth, sitting in the lot behind the local Plymouth dealership.
My first impression was that it was the most bizarre automobile styling ever conceived by man... or maybe it came from outer space. Or the designers at Plymouth must have been smoking something.

But tastes change. Now you hardly ever see one and I think they make great customs.
Rocky's green one is amazingly cool.

when I first got it I drove my 61 Dodge to work every day. one of the old timers came out to look at it and commented "These cars weren't this odd looking when they were new".

I took more pics and drooled over that car at Billetproof NW more than any other car.
So refreshing to see someone customize an "ugly" Mopar.....

    Late 50's/early '60 Fury's rule....except 1960. That was one ugly motherfucker...

  21. How the eff did you pull that off????

  22. My favourites are the 63/64 Sport Furys but that car is cool. Nice job on an unusual body style. It's funny how things go full circle. I once read an article where they said that when the transporters first arrived at the dealerships with the new 61's there were stories of dealers yelling and chasing the truck drivers down the street.
They were definately not the prom queen of 1961.

    Hey,

If I remember correctly, 1961 was the last true full unfettered design year that Virgel Exner would do for Chrysler Corporation. If you consider that the design work for the 61's began after 1958 the designs kinda add up. The designs for 1962 were the product of upper mamagement intervention and secound guessing what the rest of the industry would do. Exner told company brass the 62's weren't commericaly viable, design wise, and when they didn't sell used that as a reason to sack Exner. The design work on the sixty one model year was mentioned as well.

The 1962 Plymouth Super Sport never got past the clay model/dynock stage, but was along the 61's design line, but much more refined. Kinda what Italian coachbuilder Ghia would build in '63 with the Chrysler Ghia 6.4.

My '61 Fury was probably the best riding vehicle I've ever driven, like drivin' a couch after gobblin a jar of bennies.

I prefer the '60 for their gigantic fins and funky front fender openings, but damn, that is a really good looking '61. Very well done I say to the builder.

That's a great looking car. The dashboard looks like something from outer space. :)
