Art & Inspiration Vintage Business Cards

Ok, I've got a few business cards to design and while going through a pile of old cards, I ran across this one that had I borrowed from a buddy. I figured I should share it with you guys before I return it. Anyone else have any cool old Speed Shop Business Cards to share.

 

If I can get the laptop away from my wife tonite....I'll scan and post one of my father's old business cards from the early 60's.

 

I've got a British heavy hauling business card from 1917 featuring a White truck (I think) with wood spoked wheels I'd love to share... but NO scanner. Dammit. I also have another card that supposedly you'd get when you arrived at the Isle of Mann (as in the race) with a load that described how much you were hauling in "Stones".

Bought it for a nickel at an antique shop.

I picked this one up from KEITH'S MODEL T TRUCK STOP, Winnemucca Nv in 1960. The whorehouse was right around the corner, didn't get a card from them.

 

Here are my two favorites:

 

Not speed shops, but a couple car related business cards that found their way into our collection at work.



This card always amused me because Art's shop was an old gas station in a very inner city part of town. Nothing right in the area that I would consider to be a fishing hole. I believe his wife also worked out of the same building and she specialized in tax preparation and dog grooming and she had her own sign on the front of the place. So it was like one stop shopping if you needed to get your brakes fixed, file your taxes, get the poodle trimmed and pick up some nightcrawlers to go fishing.



The Harris's Garage card just has a nice, funky, handmade feel to it. He's taking a well deserved nap under the tree after hoisting the front end of that car up in the air with a chain, or maybe a big rope. But it looks like a big bird on the branch of that tree and I think it's going to swoop down and steal his lunch.

I doubt the shop still exists but if you're ever midway between Houston and Galveston there's a map on the back. I just noticed that his drawing of the Houston skyline looks a bit like it's giving you the finger, but I've heard that about Houston before.

Not so much vintage. Dirty and worn, but not even a little old.

Here's a few of my cousin's cards and the two letterers he used and I'm currently using for my paint work .....Rich

 

Poncho's Weird World of Color... The first customer painter I worked for in '65 in Las Vegas. A very talented painter and still the best pinstriper I've ever seen. Did some great work but he was an atrocious businessman and even worse at staying organized.

This is a stick on business card he attached to the door jam of the car....


While he lived in Washington he worked construction and fell down an elevator shaft and lost his striping arm..... So.. He re-taught himself stripe with his left hand.

 

I have the very first style buisness card that Gene Winfield gave out. It is framed with some other items he gave me for my birthday a few years back. It is all out of his personal collection and signed!
