I saw an ad for a "Common Gear" for Karmann Ghia.

 

Ell-Da-Brock.....for Edelbrock

Hal-Da-Brand......for Halibrand

Wee-Land,...and,... Wee-and .... for Weiand

and the best one, believe it or not,...Van-Dutch..... for Von Dutch

 

Just after reading the classified ads for the first time and seeing a lot of cars advertised as "mint", an old girlfriend once said, "There are an awful lot of green cars for sale"!

 

Very well said and it makes sense !

My BIG pet Peve term is Rat Rod. If it isn't a car with a $25,000 paint job it's a "Rat Rod". What happened to Hot rod, Nostalga rod or just plain Street Rod.
I think there is a big difference between a Rat Rod built 2 years ago and my car built 40 years ago and left as it was built and not modernized. Who needs A/C, heat, and windows.!

Sorry, but FBI and RPM are initialisms. I know that the term "acronym has been used for years to label all words and abbreviations formed from initials but, like "rims" for "wheels, it is, grammatically, incorrect even though it is widely used, Sorta like "irregardless"

My roomate has two I hate:
Pointing at a year old/month old/week old ANYTHING and calling it "Brand New." Once it has been used, however slightly, it's fucking used, not brand new.
"Hand me that impact," while pointing to an air ratchet. This is the same guy I caught about to use my torque wrench as a breaker bar. Assuming we agree this is a breaker bar:
"a long non-ratcheting bar that is used with socket wrench style sockets. Breaker bars are used to 'break loose' very tight fasteners"

 

How about Ads where people try to be funny so they dont have to give a description of their crappy POS car... OT car or not, people still want a clue.

I can promise you - the first one is NOT grammatically correct!
A shorter way to put it would be "Car needs restoration".

 

This may go back to the classified ad in the newspaper(remember those?) where you paid by the word/had a limit on words in the ad.

 

No such thing, they are a contrdiction in terms.

 

I think many of the things being complained about on this thread legitimately go back to "economy of words".

The text message "language" started in the early days of computers, when bandwidth was severely limited. It was considered bad form to use full sentences and full words.

The English language is changing (as it always is), for better or for worse, like it or not.

People use NOS just because the part was never used, even though it has been sitting in a pool of rusty water in a basement for 50 years.

 

Just today, I saw 5 ads for a STRAIGHT AXLE. All of them were Drop Axles. Just because it's a Tube or I-Beam, it's automatically a GASSER STRAIGHT AXLE. Drives me Freakin crazy.

 

E.g. "1957 vintage" irritates and annoys me. Vintage in cars is 1919-1930 inclusive, and nothing else.

 

I allways woundered if it really was "Break Over" bar. As the bar is designed to "break over" the socket.

 

AKA an oxymoron: airline food, wise fool, etc.

 

I was thinking that...

 

Restore Restoring Restoration .. are still one word.
Why not use the right one?
