EZ Off Oven Cleaner works really well to remove things like plastic bags that get melted to chrome exhaust pipes (On Harley's too)

A painter friend covers his hands in Lotion and puts on a pair of those thin latex painter or mechanics gloves before he drives home every day. Gets Home, pulls off the gloves, and a quick wash and all the paint is gone from the days work. Works for Oil and Grease as well.

 

Put on hand lotion then get the leather garden/driving gloves. Makes em really soft and works wonders on rough manly hands.
What ever ya do DONT use brake cleaner to get the crud off a part youre gonna weld. Pockets wont dry and extreme heat will turn it into PHOSGENE GAS.
That translates directly into dead now. The forever kind.

A health note: Before you spray any more chemicals on your hands, skin, etc., do a web search for "multiple chemical sensitivity" You'll get right cautious.

 

Talcum powder, or baby powder, has many uses. It makes it easier to get gloves on. Scrub some into your greasy hair and comb to make it appear clean, and some down your shirt makes your smell better. You can thicken fiberglass resin with it too. The first bondo was resin and talc.

Fiberglass resin will thin body putty. Some call this Rondo.

Paraffin and turpentine heated in a double boiler can be brushed onto hats and coats to make an oilskin like waterproof coating that still breathes, unlike rubber. Clear spray paint will also waterproof hats to a certain extent.

A jar of old brake fluid is great for soaking rusty frozen up parts.

 

masking tape over your band-aided up finger will make it stay on all day in the shop.

Starting fluid is great for wasp nests, the ether in it drops em dead. It usually shoots at least 10 feet to hit the nests in the house eves. Gas and sawdust works great for cleaning grease off of the shop floor. (Don't smoke that Cuban while doing this, and keep the door open). Water misted lightly from a hose into the carb of a running engine will remove carbon from the combustion chambers.

 

I use it to keep me from rolling out of bed during the night.

 

I thought it was used to keep the kids in line.

And DO NOT use any type of spray lube (like WD40, PB Blaster, etc) when drilling for the same reason- almost lost a great friend when he tried this.

Old sleepers = cheap storage shed. Remove the bunks from 1, use the cab-to-sleeper seal to attach 2 together, level, wire the lights to a motorcycle battery wired to a solar battery maintainer. 8X10 storage shed you can stand upright in, hurricane-proof, for $100 (got mine at an equipment auction, not including the battery and charger). Lights come on when you open the door (that locks with automotive grade security). Water tight (against blowing rain even), insulated, carpeted, and comes in pretty colors. Built in heavy duty shelving in one side (mine came rated at 550 Lbs top bunk, no weight limit on the bottom), room for 4 sets of metal shelving and walking room in the other (that's the door to use). Don't try this if you were a sucker, and bought a house in a neighborhood with an HOA Bonus - if you want to use it as a workspace, it has built-in 12V powered heat / AC, stereo system, 12v outlets, etc, but you'll need a real battery charger to run it. And the padded carpet floor is WAY more comfortable than the doghouse, when you piss off the old lady...
Even if you have to pay a flatbed to haul them home, $200 beats $400 for a flimsy tin wannabe shed.
Downside: if you don't wax them now and then, the paint will go to crap just like a car, and I'm betting they don't look so good painted with a brush...

 

Place damp tea bags over burns to remove the sting.

 

Sounds similar to what my Granny did for me when I was a kid and got several red wasp stings on my ankle. She wrapped it in damp cigar ashes.

 

there has to be a safer alternative to this, maby kerosene? parts cleaner is basically nothing but that. The gas is just asking for trouble.

I'm not sure on the WD40, but he's not kidding on the chlorinated spray, it will kill you that quick, if it doesn't kill you, it will make you wish it had, life long complications. That's why it's being phased out for non chlorinated cleaners. It should even have a warning on the can.

try this for a toothache, or an abscess on your gum, soak a tea bag and hold it on there, it really works.

the tea bags will also help with this.

 

Old serpentine belt works great for this, too. Add a pair of vise grips and you've got a redneck strap wrench.

 

liberally dab a sunburn with Red Wine Vinegar will pull the sting and heat out, and help convert to a tan...only drawback is you smell like an Easter Egg for a few hours.

 

Suggested early on in the thread that used motor oil would clean your hands.... Aargh, major skin cancer risk!

If you live in a hard water area you'll be ticked off with the stains left after cleaning dark painted wire wheels, a few squirts with the stuff used for cleaning the shower after you have finished, leaves 'em sparkly.

 

A big 'ol CarneAsada burrito alittle wax paper and an ice cold horchata is the absolute best way to get your hands clean.
