Which type and brand of oil are you using?

I know this has been discused for years and we all have our favoriate brand of oil but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been reading up on all the New Oil types that are being sold and some it appears cause more damage then most of us know to our engines.

After reading all this stuff for the first time in 40's years and I am not sure what type or brand of oil to put in my small block Cheverolet that won't in some way damage the engine.

It's a 350 built crate engine and yes they did give me an idea what oil to use but the more you read the more confusing this whole deal becomes.

This engine only runs about once a week when I take her for a drive.

I have been using a straight 30 weight minerial based oil.

Any advice you can offer would be a great help.

Most of us spend so much money building these engines that the thought of something I am pouring into it damaging it is drives me crazy.

    Thanks Jimbo

i buy the cheapest oil on the shelf. the synthetic oil is a billion dollar SCAM. the key to engine longevity is changing your oil often, not letting dirty, high-dollar synthetic oil circulate. i even do this on my harley and it now has 43K miles. i dump the cheap oil at 1,500 miles. i just recently raced a dude on his softail with a 117ci S&S. I BEAT HIM with my stock 88ci! i must be doing something right....

Yep. I'm assembling a motor, major overhaul, it's still on the stand, and after pre-oiling it, I've already changed it once.
Watchin' the oil pressure gauge helps too.:D

I remember, about 1977, when GENERIC brands were kind of popular, I bought GENERIC oil. Now, it's 20-50, lowest price on the shelf.

  9. Rotella or Delo 15/40. 1500 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Of course, thats running through dual remote 2qt oil filters. A buddy of mine uses my drain oil and filters in his car. His engine seems to be holding up well too. Although, he doesn't change as often as I do.

  10. Mag-1 with a quart of Lucas additive.

  11. Castrol 10W40 or 20W40. 10W30 in the winter.

Haven't tried the long mile oil yet. Maybe I should I got about 130k on my Ol' Standby motor.

Valvoline VR-1 20-50w in the hot rod Jimmy 302.

Valvoline VR-1 30w in the stock 235 stovebolt.

Both are solid lifters and oil & filters are changed at 2,000 mile intervals.

While this is true, it's not that simple. Engine condition, driving conditions and the environment in which the engine is run all determine how long an oil can go. I bought my DD, '01 power stroke new and made the first oil change at 5000km, the second at 10,000km and have changed it every 10,000 since. Ford recommends 8000km max. However, I have just over 300,000km on it now and it uses 1L between changes, just as it's done since new. In my Caterpillars, I change every 250 hours in the summer, dustier conditions and cold starts every morning, but when building ice roads in winter, they run 24/7 (no morning starts) and there's no dust. I change every 500 hours in winter and the oil is CLEANER than it is at 250 hours in summer. I use Rotella in everything as I buy it by the skid but I may consider something else or an additive for my flat tappet engines.

Hmmmm, so, if I change the oil in my stock 327 more often, does that mean I will be able to blow the doors off the next 454 that comes along??:p:D

In my flathead I've been running Valvoline All Fleet 30wt and a bottle of zddp plus for a few years now. I've been pretty happy with it.

In my '67 with a roller cam small block I run regular Valvoline 10w40.

In my daily I run 5w20 Mobil 1

i've got solids in my 235 and when taken apart for a rebuild the cam was still within specs and it NEVER got any fancyfied, high-dollar oil.

i dump "super tech" (walmart brand) 20/50 in all three holes on my harley. it's fine....

my harley engine equates to a 352ci V8 and his engine a 468ci. so yeah, you will beat him...

I use their super tech filters on my Shovelhead. They're even made in the USA! I run Valvoline racing oil in it.

Valvoline VR1 20w-50 Racing in everything I own. From the daily to the Hot Rod to the Race Car. I've used Valvoline products (engine oil, ATF, gear oil, coolant) for over 40 years. Recommend it to any one who will listen. Excellent product. No problems. Change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.
