WOW x infinity. What a restoration! Seeing this car fully restored, and to see it do so well is one reason I try to attend as many non-hot rod events as I can (not nearly enough). A master rerstoration on a semilal car is just an amazing thing to see, eh? So get out there, polish your Abner's and find out what else is out there! Gary

What is the almost Bugatti looking grey with black fenders car? I think it's number 753? Crazy!! I love it. Thank you.

Yes - that was a Bugatti. What caught my eye on that one were the huge chrome "pencil braces" that run from the top of the radiator to the fenders.

This is related, although I'm not quite sure what to make of it:

This is good news, as Scott can use the room. Too many old Ponchos to restore, plus many others.

In the shop now are a 69 Judge, 63 Swiss Cheese, 62 Royal Super Duty, a Z28 and a HEMI Road Runner. Plus a few others.:)

Dennis, which 63 swiss cheese car is he restoring? 62 Royal super duty, is this the same Royal car that has been setting in an Ohio garage since the 60's? i know the owner passed a few years ago, and the car was possibly for sale, guess someone finally bought it?

I don't know for sure who owns the Swiss Cheese. Yes to the second question.

If it's the Union Park car that was at Meadow Brook, then the owner is Tim Thorpe.

I love this car so much and can't believe how close it came to going to the scrapyard less than two years ago. I remember seeing that car the FIRST day it was posted on E-Bay and thought it looked VERY interesting but when I noticed in the description that the interior color was listed as "green" I dismissed the car as home-built because I knew that the "factory production" Tempests were all White with BLUE interiors. The VIN was even listed in the original ad and all I had to do was walk 10 feet away to check it against Pete McCarthy's excellent book. Well.......BIG mistake! When I checked back on the car TWO days later I noticed that it did, in fact, have Blue interior and that the bidding had already reached $36,000! I knew right then and there that there was only one reason that the bidding was so high......this was the real thing! This car represents Pontiac's maximum effort Drag Racing attempt and I certainly hope & wish that possibly one (or more!) of the station wagon's would re-surface. The discovery of this Tempest does give hope that maybe, just maybe, there are still some significant historical finds still out there.

    I had a similar experience....

My Pontiac buddies starting calling me early Friday evening, asking about it. I pulled up the auction and when I saw the rusty front end I sort of dismissed it and didn't really give it any further thought.

I keep all of my reference materials at work, so Monday morning about 7 am I grabbed a coffee and pulled Pete's book off the shelf. It opened automatically to the page(s) on the SD cars, I scanned my finger across the page with the VINs and...about fell out of my chair!

Naturally, it makes perfect sense that the car would have a steel front end on it during the time of the auction, since the sheet metal was changed early on, and since the aluminum had already been found and was known to be in Florida.

Still was pretty exciting stuff, even though it quickly went out of my league (financially).

This car is already apart. Not the car that was just at Meadowbrook.

I didn't see the auction for this car until very late friday night/early saturday morning (it started on a thrusday night) saw a post on the PY board, about an old 63 race car on ebay, no mention of it being anything special, actually a few guys were saying it wasn't worth the current $1200 dollar bid LOL!! i checked it out, took me all of 3 or 4 minutes to suspect it wasn't just another 63 tempest! first clue was the color combo,, then it had a tempest front end, but it was a Lemans coupe, it was missing all the extra chrome that the Lemans generally have on them, the steel hood had 2 black painted circles on it for inline dual carb to be cut out for a scoop, the factory tach and the radio/heater delete plates on the dash, the clutch pedal assembly, the delete plates on the firewall, the way the wiring harness was routed under the hood, the alunimun front brake drums, the low miles and the 1964 plates on it. there were no pics of the trunk area or the parts in the trunk at that time. then i got Pete's book out, and checked the VIN, BINGO!! if the claimed $4000 BIN would have been there then, it would have been mine! next was too figure out which one it was! gee, missing alum front end, had big car rearend, and was a stick car, noticed the big dent in the rear bumper, and what appeared to be decals painted over on lower rear 1/4s, and a couple other items, again looking at pete's book, BINGO! Stans car is missing it's frontend, and has a dent in the same spot on the rear bumper, the Champion decals on the 1/4s, and had a big car rear and a 3spd! + ran an Isky 505 cam the same as on the tag on the dash! Elementary my dear Watson LOL!!, have to thank Mike Guffey for teaching me to look for "fingerprints" when your hunting old race cars. I would be willing to bet a least one of the 63 wagons will be "found" in the next 10 years, as there are 4 of them unaccounted for. i would love to find one of them!!

Ok - must be the former Mickey Thompson car? I don't know who owns that one.

I do recall Scott was planning on redoing that one. It looked fine to me...

That's what i thought to, i think some guys get caught up in making these car "too perfect" in some cases it causes the car to lose more of it's "originality":(

E-Bay Lemans is headed for Norwalk today. Scott is planning on making a pass with it, sometime this week-end. Who will be the driver?
Could be Scott or maybe the owner will be behind the wheel. Maybe they will ask Arnie to be the pilot.
It should be Historic, no matter who is driving.

If your a Pontiac Enthusiast, you should be there.

  28. I almost bid on it too, and then I noticed that the $'s were going crazy and then I realized it was a special history car.

    Update 11/16/2010:

Look for the February 2011 issue of High Performance Pontiac.
Very nice article about the restoration of the E-Bay Lemans.

Lemans is on the cover and in the center fold.

    p.s.
Scott and the boys at Supercar Specialties are now working on the restoration of the 1962 Royal Pontiac Catalina.
