I want to lower the rear of my 48 stylemaster,it still has the stock torque tube. Will I run into any problems doing this, and how far(safely) can I go?
With a torque tube there is no concern with pinion angle since there is no rear U-joint. As you lower the car you actually decrease the angle at the front U-joint.
Only problem there could be is lowering to the point that gear oil flows from the rear end up the torque tube. There are baffles available to counter this.
I had a '54, back in the day, that I tried to run with 6" blocks and it would eat up the u joints in no time at all! The reason that I remember this so clearly is that I tried using them several times and they were a bitch to replace
agreed we air bagged a buick with a torque tube and she rides quite nicely with no problems and its been done for about a year and a half.
