I've a question about prewar rodding

I'm working on a hotrod illustration project and have a question.

What hotrodding existed to what extent before WWII in the states? I know people modified cars yet what cars would have been used if anyby proto hotroders?

Suggestions and imput will effect what car I draw.

The project happens in December 1940.
