Did any cars with M20, M21, M22 come with a four on the tree configuration? I searched a bit, but couldn't find much. My memory fails me, but I could have sworn some cars had it?
Some did. SAAB, Volvo and a couple other, similarly European makes. Did any of these have a Muncie in them?? Doubt it. Could the linkage be adapted?? Dunno. Cosmo
I have seen at least one conversion changing a 3 on the tree to a 4 on tree. Reverse was a lever on the floor. This was back in the 70s I seem to remember he said it was not the hard to do.
Don't think so. "Three on the tree" and "Four on the floor" just sound right. I don't think any good American car company would go over that line.
You can adapt three on the tree to four with a floor lever or pull cable for reverse. Just be sure it's in neutral before you try for Reverse. And apparently I need to type faster.
True, including the '58 Simca, pull way forward for reverse, otherwise up-down-up-down...needed all four speeds to get out of its own way with about 40 hp...
yeah FORD did it,I had a 64? econoline long wheelbase van back in the 70s and it was a 4 on the tree what a SOB to adjust ,dont remember what the tranny was,,,,,,,,,,kinda cool tho
Nope. No North-American built cars ever came with 'four on tree'. Four speed shifters were/are always floor-mounted . The only car I've ever actually seen with a 4-speed column shift set-up was a '1950's-something' Mercedes sedan that a neighbor used to have. Had a 1958 "Goliath" German fwd had 4 on the tree. actually it ran pretty good after I fixed the manifold and put a Rochester 2 bbl on it.
I had a '56 Simca (French) Had 4 on the tree. All four plus reverse was up there. What a dog!!!!!!!!! Normal Norman
Here is a picture of my good friend Jose's 56 Chevy in Boca Cuba. It has a 5 litre Mercedes Engine and it 5 ON THE TREE What a treet to drive Late September we will finish his 59 Impala and his 55 Chevy
OH YEAH!! crawled under it more than once in the rain to get it unjammed....but what do ya do in a early van..........when your 17
Thanks Tman and everyone else. Found that a while back. The reason I ask is that I would rather put a 4 speed on my column and save the floor space for my Model A. I have a truck that is three on the tree and really enjoy it. Looked at a few shop manuals and it looks straightforward to convert.
Yeah, MART3046, I had a 1957 Mercedes 319 turtle-back with a 4-on-the-tree. American iron though................. no way!
Looking through some old books. (posting it for posterity) Chevrolet Van 1968 - 1969 - 1970 Had the option of a Borg-Warner T10 4 Speed that was a column shift.
Had a friend with a '67 Mercedes, four on the tree. Was in the car when he outran a '65 Impala with the 396...you should have seen the look on the Impala's driver when he was getting left behind by a 4 door sedan!
