Ppg paint questions

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rubyreddog, Jun 25, 2010.

  1. I have a gallon of PPG DCU 2020 clear that I can't find activator for. I need DU 4, DU 5 OR DU 6 but so far I have struck out. Does anyone know if I can use something else? Maybe DCX 61 or a generic activator?

Alco can someone explain the difference between DT 870 and DT 1870 reducer?

    Thanks.....Clay

You probably can't find hardener because your in CA because they still make/sell DU5 and DU6. I know that in DCU2021, DCX61 is what I use. Try calling a PPG rep, maybe they can remember. Never heard of DT1870, but based on the rest of PPG's reducer numbers, it appears that it may mean its a VOC compliant version of 870? Good luck!

Call Kim Taylor at Body Shop Supplies. He is a PPG dealer, has been for years. If he can get the proper activator or if there is a CA substitute, he will know.

  4. Thanks so much for the advice. I'll try Kim. Hate to throw away a full gallon on PPG clear.

If you don't get bthe answer, I'll check my PPG tech book, it has alot of discontinued products in there and I'm sure has the info you need.

  6. I'm being told that du5 is not available here and they won't ship it to Ca. I have a friend in Nevada who has agreed to buy some there and ship it to me. Thanks.....Clay

2020 is reduced 2:1:1 with DT series reducers. It will take DU4 (discontinued) DU5, DU6, or DU7 (which I think is discon too). DU5 is the medium and DU6 is hot, I think DU7 is extra hot!

Still nothing on 1870 reducer though, I'm still sticking with it being a low VOC version.

you can use any of the reducers! dt 1870,1885,1895 whatever 870 is just short for 1870! du5 is just a slower catalyst! you can use dcx9 or dcx61. i still use it here in ca everyday!

1800 series reducers are good there not reactive for dbc 1845 is the compliant ones. all others are illegal in 1171 areas. la, riverside countys. only the drr dbu reducers are 1160 1170 1185 non compliant to. 2002, 2020 is not compliant only dc3010 dc4010 and the new ec700 clears are leagal to use in restricted areas.

  10. So do you use dcx61 with 2020 clear as a replacement for du5??? I have used dcx61 with 2021 clear but it has a different mixing ratio as compared to du5. At what ratio so you mix it when you use dcx61 with 2020 clear???

BTW they still make du5 and I can get it in other states, just not here in L.A.

  11. I can still get DCU2021 clear and dcx61 at my PPG dealer. I'm just trying to avoid throwing away a gallon of 2020 because I can't but the du5 in L.A. anymore.
