Are you saying that no spark comes out of the #3 wire, or that cylinder #3 is dead? If strong, blue spark jumps out of #3 wire, then plug, piston, valve train.

If you are getting spark through the cap on #3 post, then it's the wire......:D

    Compression test too.
    If it's a Volvo it's a flat cam lobe...

im assuming its a points type dist. if it is, get it to Cyl#3 is and see if the points are opening. if they are and the coil if firing then check resistance at the plug wire. (end to end) and see what the resistance is. then move the wire and see if it changes or reads Open lead (OL) on a DVOM. if the wire is fine and you swapped plugs from a known good cylinder then i would say you have a mechanical problem. dead cylinder, flattened cam lobe if the valves are not opening or a stuck open valve.

another thing did you swap any parts from a known good cyl to the bad one? like plugs and wires and see if it moved to another cyl?

another idea is you might have a tooth or two missing from the dist gear or on the cam gear and its throwing things off. but i would think that would mess your timing up so bad that it wouldn't run.
